Can Prevacid stop working?

I wondered if anyone has had their child outgrow Prevacid and have to switch medications. Can you build up an immunity to it? My son is approaching 4 months and has been doing great on Prevacid. He suddenly has become discontent and fussy again. So, I wanted to see if anyone has had that experience before I call the doctor to have ears, etc. checked out.

if it’s compounded prevacid, it may be that it becomes unstable- after 2 weeks or even sooner

also, babies grow so quickly that their medication needs to be increased- it’s prescribed by weight so if your son has gained weight since his initial dose it might be time to increase it

I’m wondering the same thing because my 2 1/2 year old son has been on Prevacid since about 13 months and did fine on it except during illnesses. We had him down to 15mg solutab per day but just recently upped it to 30mg again because he is having more burping, less eating, increased irritability, not sleeping well and bad breath. It’s been about 3 days, but I see no improvement yet. He looks like he has the beginning of a cold, so that could be the problem. Since it’s the winter, it could be that your son is in the beginning stages of a cold or something. Sorry I can’t be of more help. Hope someone else can offer more advice.

Ok – so we went to the doctor and all was clear so we put him on Axid in the afternoon. Now we do Prevacid in am and pm and Axid 4-5 hours after his morning dose or Prevacid. We thought it was making a difference at first but the past three days he has fussed non stop if he is awake. We are out of our minds. It is so strange that he could go from happy, laid back baby to fussy baby all the time. So, back to the 4 month question – did anyone else reach this point at 4 months where things just got really bad? Did rice cereal help anyone or make it worse?

Could he be teething? Teething definitely makes the reflux worse!

My DS symptoms have just gotten bad again. He wil be 4 months on Sat! I looked on Marci-kids and according to their calculator he should be getting another half of the 15mg solutabs. I started giving him the additional dose yesterday. No improvement yet. Also, he is drooling so much I have had to change him 3 times today and his drool/vomit smells putrid so I am not sure if it’s reflux or teething or both.

We recently ran into the same problem with our dd that will be 4 months next week. We have upped her dose accordingly and are waiting to see if it works. She has been drooling and spitting up more than normal also so I was thinking it could possibly be teething. Who knows. I will take any advice as well. 🙂

Our GI told us that according to research data, reflux peaks from 4-6 months, when it’s at its worst, and then slowly improves with most babies outgrowing it between 9-12 months. Many people find this time to be difficult, and it certainly was for Hailey as well. I think the teething just compounds things. I hope that you see an improvement soon.

My son is 4 months tomorrow and is definitely getting worse. He is on a healthy dose of prevacid (30 mg prevacid solutabs/ day divided into 2 doses) and we are having to give him zantac midday to get him through. He is burping a lot and is teething. He is just so much fussier these days. I know that it is supposed to peak at this time. Hope everyone’s 4 month olds outgrow this mess soon!

Same here. My dd is teething i am sure. The doc wanted to up her meds and I wouldnt. mainly for the fact most babies are fussier when teething, and it may/maynot be the reflux bothering her. I hate giving her meds anyway, but I am keeping an eye out for the bloody stool. If that comes back I may not have a choice.
