InactiveJust wondering if this has happened to any of your LOs. My almost 5mo son has congestion in his nose often due to his reflux and a few weeks ago he lost his voice. Well, when he cried it sounded very mousy and a lot quieter. He would laugh and no sound would come out. He’d try to coo and a quiet sound would come out maybe half the time. His voice got better a week later and now he is losing it again. I’m thinking it’s the reflux?? Anything I can do to help him?
Thanks!

InactiveMy daughter’s voice used to get very hoarse, before we got the medication figured out. But she never completely lost her voice. I imagine as the throat heals, though, that would go away if it were due to acid reflux. A pediatrician might prescribe a steroid to help relax the vocal chords, too, as they do for croup, but if the underlying cause is GERD, I’m not sure if they would.

InactiveMy son lost his voice completely every 6 weeks until we started adding caracream to his prevacid. If you want to see an animation of what is happening to his voice go to http://www.Marci-kids.com and click on EER

InactiveThanks! The Marci-Kids site has been down for the past few days! It’s driving me nuts because I’ve wanted to look at some things there badly.
Anyway, does the caracream do something else besides eliminate the need to wait 30 min to feed? My son is on the Prevacid solutabs…does caracream work with that?
I’m so sad the past few days because his voice keeps getting worse and he can barely express himself any more. I miss his sweet little sounds soooo much.

InactiveCaracream contains a sodium bicarbonate buffer, as far as I know, which I imagine helps neutralize some of the acid immediately, as well as soothe the throat.

InactiveThe Caracream neutralizes the acid which allows the medicine to safely pass into their system with out getting destroyed before it gets there. Ryan was on 30mg of prevacid daily, with little relief. Once we started adding the caracream we were able to drop it to 15mg, he never lost his voice again, his feeding adversion went away and we no longer had to go to the ER for fluids.
