InactiveSo my 5 month old dd was on Prevacid solutabs but she reacted to them
(mucous in stool). So the ped said to switch to OTC Prevacid and I have been giving it with home made pear sauce. However I notice her eczema seems worse and am wondering if she could be reacting to the pears. My question is: do you have to dose OTC meds in something acidic or can you just use water? Water would be my preference.
I have tried looking it up and it says dose in applesauce, ENSURE
pudding, cottage cheese, yogurt or strained pears. Also may sprinkle
granules into apple juice, orange juice
or tomato juice. I am not sure if this is directed
just for taste reasons or if the granules HAVE to be given with
something acidic. Wouldn’t the stomach itself be acidic enough to keep the enteric coating from dissolving? I mean that is how adults take the med, just with water and it works.Anyone know? The ped said to ask the pharmacist and the pharmacist didn’t know either.

Keymasteryes you do,
I am no scientist and I cannot pretend to know why, but if you look at/read through the ‘stickies’ in the Medicine Forum, you may find the exact answer.
You must give on an empty stomach, give w/ whatever it is listed – it’s in Prevacid 101 – and then have a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later,,,
Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

also check to make sure it’s a high enough dose…
and here’s
OTC w/ applesauce, pedialyte, etc:

InactiveThis will be the 4th full day I have been giving her the OTC Prevacid. I am giving with home made pear sauce. She is still in a lot of pain and the mucousy stools she got on the solutabs have not yet resolved. I am going to give it more time though and see.
I do have the ped’s support. The GI would not agree with 30mg Prevacid for an infant, the highest she would go was 22.5mg. So I use my ped for meds but keep the GI because she is helpful in other ways (for instance she had a custom sleeping wedge fabricated for my dd). I am very lucky to have an amazing ped who really knows her stuff and LISTENS to the parent.
Hoping things start to improve soon. If not dd will have to go back on Nexium because even though it wasn’t fully controlling her pain it was much better than this.

InactiveShe did not get better on OTC, she was reacting to the Prevacid itself. She was on it for over two weeks and her pain was not under control and the mucousy stools never went away. We had to go back to Nexium. Unfortunately her gut was messed up permanently and stools have not gone back to normal since then. However her pain is better again and she’s sleeping fairly well now. I am not going to mess with her meds anymore. We have an endoscopy on Tues so hopefully will get some answers then.

Keymasterthe endoscopy should give you some answers – I’d say it was a protein intolerance, by the mucousy stools & eczema…
hang in there! & keep us posted!
