Sarah has been whimpering periodically all weekend and told me her mouth hurt, but wouldn’t let me look at it until today. She has a pretty large canker sore in her mouth!! My heart is breaking for her because I know how badly they hurt and she doesn’t understand. She will not let me put any orajel on it…well, we tried once but it hurts worse initially before the numbness sets in, and she won’t let me try again.
I looked online and it says that canker sores are RARE in children under the age of 10! Yikes! Is there anything I can do for her? What causes them? Should I eliminate anything from her diet?Help!March 22, 2009 at 10:47 pm #61771AnonymousInactiveI know how bad those things hurt! My whole family has them and has had since we were kids, young kids. I get them pretty bad if I eat too much citrus, so may be a FA?? Could she have had any trauma recently? There are also some kids that get them from dietary deficiencies (ie. iron, zinc, etc)
March 23, 2009 at 8:12 am #61776AnonymousInactiveI agree with the PP about the citrus & also, have you changed her brand of toothpaste or even to a diff’t kind of toothbrush recently? Some toothpastes can have ingredients that cause sores inside the mouth if you are really sensitive to it. I’ve always been really sensitive to certain kinds. Just an idea. Maybe there is something OTC that can numb the sore for her. poor baby!!!!
March 23, 2009 at 11:10 am #61778AnonymousInactiveIsaac and I get them and they are horrible. I agree about different kinds of toothpaste causing them. I cannot do colgate total b/c I get tons of canker sores at once.
March 23, 2009 at 11:37 am #61779AnonymousInactiveWarm salt water helps, but good luck with that one if she wont even do orajel! My mom used to use cepacol spray on us as kids, and I can’t go near it now. Even the smell makes me want to vomit, but it did help as I remember. Hope she feels better!
March 23, 2009 at 11:49 am #61780AnonymousInactiveIf I drink Orange Juice I can almost guarantee I will have one in a few days, but if I do the low acid, I am fine. I would definitely check out if there are acidic foods you can avoid or find substitutes for……
Poor baby!!! That must hurt so much for her!!!I would call the doc regardless, just to see if there is somethign they could do for her, or if they want to check it out…..March 23, 2009 at 8:55 pm #61785hellbenntKeymasterugh! poor baby! I know that at one point I was getting them (I get cold sores, too, yes the ugly words herpes simplex I) and the vitamin Lysine helped…she’s too young but maybe there’s something like that for little ones?
here’s about lysine (not sure if it’s only ‘good’ for cold sores?):~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ok I’m back! turns out canker sores and cold sores are not related (see? I learn so much here, LOL!)here’s about canker sores and toddlers:http://www.huggieshappybaby.com/info/bow/article.aspx?article_id=2728&_nc=633734349479628395&_nockcheck=truefrom above link:For a home remedy, combine 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 1 part water. Dab (gently!) on the canker sore with a cotton swab. Follow by dabbing on a little milk of magnesia. Do this three or four times a day to soothe the area and help it heal.also (interesting, at least to me, hA!) from above link:There’s some evidence that food allergies, viral infections, and dietary deficiencies (in particular, iron, folic acid, or B12) can also trigger canker sores.hellbennt2009-03-23 20:59:21
March 24, 2009 at 8:14 am #61792AnonymousInactiveSometimes if kids bite the inside of their mouth it turns into a cancer sore. At least that seems to happen to my kids. It really hurts and does take some time to go away. I believe that I once read that salt water rinces can help, but not sure. Poor girl
March 24, 2009 at 4:26 pm #61808AnonymousInactiveamy, my son and i both go through periods where we seem to get alot of canker sores—the worst ones are on the sides of my tongue, near the back. if i get any kind of bump causing a minor trauma in my mouth, there have been times that it was almost a guarantee that i would get a canker.
interestingly enough, canker sores can be one of the signs of celiac disease, but i don’t think my girls had much of a problem with them before they went gluten free.March 25, 2009 at 8:22 pm #61825AnonymousInactiveThank you so much for the help ladies!! She still has the sore (it is on the bottom of the gumline by her lip…I can only see it when she lets me pull her bottom lip all the way out) It does seem to be getting better and she seems less bothered by it now…I just hope it completely goes away soon!
March 31, 2009 at 9:19 pm #61934AnonymousInactiveI take teh amino acyd Lysine when i get cold sores. Lysine is not made by teh body, so we need to get it from diet.
I have also read that low vitamin c can cause mouth sores. How is her intake of vitamin C and Lysine?i hope she feels better soon. -
