InactiveWe were at the emerg all morning b/c Hailey slipped/tripped yesterday evening and hasn’t been able to walk since. It really didn’t seem like a bad fall- we were at my in-laws and their floors are marble and slippery- she was walking and fell down on her hands and knees and just wouldn’t stop wailing. We came home and noticed that she couldn’t walk and was lying on the ground. This morning she still couldn’t walk at all- she’ll try to take a step and then just starts crying and lies down. She’s trying to crawl a bit but it also seems to bother her. The x-rays all came back clear. There’s no bruising or swelling so it can’t be sprained. No obvious inflammation. They said to go back for more x-rays if she can’t walk in two days.
Has anyone else ever seen this happen? It was such a minor fall I really am stumped about what could have happened.

InactiveI wonder if it could be a pinched nerve or something? Maybe it feels numb or tingly?? Just an idea.
Hope she feels better soon, and you can find out what’s bothering her.

InactivePoor little Hailey – could it be that it scared her so much that she is scared to walk now? Just a thought. Hope things get better for her soon

InactiveI agree it’s possible she is just scared to walk. I hope things get better soon.

InactiveThanks guys. I’m pretty sure that she’s not scared to walk. When you see her you can see something’s wrong, and this morning when I put her shoe on she started screaming.

InactiveI think I would take her back and show them how she acts when you try to put her shoe on. It sounds like the may have missed something.

InactiveI am not really sure what it could be except maybe a sprained ankle maybe?! I hope she feels better soon!

InactiveDid they check her toes? I guess they would have checked those in the x-rays though… but would a jammed toe show up on the x-ray? Maybe just gently examine each toe to see if it might be one in particular. (or rule them out all together)

InactiveYou should see if you can have her X-rayed again…My son did this at 2yrs of age, and they took Xrays and sent us home saying it was a sprain..then the next day he was screaming and wouldnt walk on it so we went back in, and sure enough he had a hairline fracture of his tibia..they called it a toddlers fracture..he was in a splint cast for about 2 1/2 weeks…the first xray showed nothing and the 2nd it was barely visiable, but once it started healing the new bone showed up really clearly.
I guess its a common thing in toddlers from falling or slipping..my kid did it falling off his bed…but I would definatly have them recheck it–there is still alot of cartilage so its hard to catch it..
good luck

InactiveOh no, Lori. You must be frantic. I’d defintely take her back, too. I hope and pray it’s nothing too serious. Ellie fell and hurt her foot a few weeks ago and you would have sworn it was broken by the way she was limping and refusing to bear weight on it, but the next day I realized that when she was distracted she didn’t limp as much so it was pretty much an over reaction on her part to the pain. Hopefully that’s all it is with Hailey.
Please keep us posted.

Inactivelori, someof those little fractures just don’t show up at first. kassie tore ligaments in her wrist and when we went back to recheck it later, the x-ray showed a small fracture that had not been visible before. also, a growth plate fracture will not show up immediately—-sometimes they will do x-rays again if they suspect that—-which is maybe why they told you to come back in 2 days. hopefully it is nothing serious.

InactiveThanks, I wasn’t too worried about it, but she seems to be getting worse. Trying to walk but can’t. I took the girls for their flu shots this aft and the ped said if she can’t walk by wednesday then he wants to do a bone scan b/c it might be a toddler’s fracture which isn’t easy to see on the x-rays. Sheesh… it’s always something.

InactiveLori,
Last year Isaac dropped a can of something on my foot, and apparantly it slightly fractured one of the little bones. Anyway, it really hurt, but the next day it hurt even worse. I went to the instacare that day and the doc there told me that foot injuries are one of the most painful ones. He also said that they almost always hurt worse the second day. I can’t remember the reason, but I bet that’s why Hailey is seeming worse tonight – she’s starting on her second day. Poor thing.
Hope she heals up soon.November 13, 2006 at 7:53 pm #17915Anonymous
InactiveWhen I worked at the doctor’s office there were children like Hailey they refused to walk, some due to really bad bruising. In Hailey’s case a bone scan is much better than a repeat x-ray, it is hard to see a slight fracture on an x-ray on such a little child a bone scan will be much more accurate. I’m glad you have a good Peds MD to order one if needed. Hope it is just bruising, please keep us up dated!
