Caracream with Losec

Hi,

Due to my 5 months constant feeding aversion. We started using caracream last week with Lansoprazole (didn’t do much). We just switched to caracream with losec last night as per Dr Phillips or Marci-kids. Does anyone know how long it would take for the losec to kick in?

switching from one PPI from another doesn’t take time, like it does for just starting a PPI

you should see results w/in a day or two…

This is true, but we saw a huge change when we switched from Prevacid to Zegerid after about 10 days. Not sure why… probably more about being on the right dose than the actual medicine.

Good luck with the caracream. Hope it helps. We’ve been on it for a while and it’s the only thing that helped my dd, and she had a terrible feeding aversion. The other part of the picture is getting the dose right. How much losec is he on? How much prevacid was he on?

We are mixing 16 20mg capsules witch the caracream and giving her 3.5ml 3x a day. We started a week ago with prevacid, but nothing happened. I hope that the losec will work. How long did it take for your dd to get over her feeding aversion?

This is just my personal opinion-

But, I think that you need to give the med more time to work- up to 14 days- before deciding that it’s not doing anything. What kind of results were you looking for? What I mean by that, is that I was always hoping for the meds to fix the feeding aversion and using that as a barometer for whether or not the med was working. For some people, that’s a good measure. But for us, Hailey’s feeding aversion was so entrenched, she had esophagitis and was in so much pain. So when we got her on a good dose of meds, I saw an improvement in her demeanor after 2 weeks. It still wasn’t perfect, but she was in general arching and screaming less. Her feedings were still bad, but she still had a feeding aversion and she still had esophagitis. For us, it took about 2-3 months of being on a good dose of prevacid in CaraCream for her to really calm down and I assumed this meant that her esophagitis had been healed. Unfortunately her feeding aversion was another story. We started feeding therapy at 8 months and continued until 16 months. Things slowly improved from there.

I’m not telling you this to depress you. Many moms were able to turn their child’s feeding aversion around with a good dose of meds. Others were not. I think it partly depends on how young the child is, how entrenched/severe the aversion is, and the particular cirumstance and nature of that child. They’re all different.

About the dose- sorry, but it’s hard to figure out the math with CaraCream. How many mg does she take per day in total? How many mg per day was she on with prevacid? How is she taking the losec?… prevacid in CaraCream tastes much better than losec does.

Good luck. I hope that things turn around for her. If this doesn’t do the trick with the feeding, you might want to look into a feeding evaluation. They’re typically done by OTs or SLPs to rule out/identify any particular causes of the problem. There’s also feeding therapy to address ongoing issues. You can always contact your EI program if you need help.

She was taking 10.5 mg of the prevacid 3x a day. Now she takes about 13 mg of losec 3x a day, but she really hates it. Can we mix it with Mylanta or something? Also, can I give her 1ml of mylanta before every feed?

So she’s on a good dose…

I know this sounds gross, but taste the suspension that you’re giving her. When I tasted the losec I thought that I was going to vomit until I got a chaser…. it’s SO bitter. That’s why we went from CaraCream with prilosec, to caracream with prevacid. I would think that it’s okay to add mylanta to each dose b/c it’s immediate release but email marci-kids to make sure. Also see if there’s anything you can add to help with flavour. Just a thought, if you’re doing losec, are you somewhere where you can get zegerid (i.e. the US)… probably not if you’re calling it “losec”…

I wish I was in the US. How about the Mylanta; how much can we give her before each feed?
