I posted this under medications, but maybe it fits here better. My son chokes a few times a day after feedings. It is terrifying
because he stops breathing for a few seconds. Then, he coughs
excessively. He is on zantac, and while it helps with his fussiness, it
does not help his reflux episodes. Would a PPI help with the choking?
How dangerous is the choking? Do most GERD babies choke? What can be
done about it?November 1, 2010 at 9:21 pm #67248AnonymousInactiveMy little guy whom is 3 month does the same thing. I’ve prompted my Dr. about it being acid reflux, and she prescribed Reglan (Metoclopram)…after about 5 days of things BEING WORSE, I stopped it. He was unhappy, refused to eat and was crabby all day when he was on it. She then decided he might have some congestion draining in his throat and it was causing him to choke. …Well we’ve been on amoxicillian for 4 days…Cant say its changed anything. I really think he needs some Zantac. I’m not crazy over the med she first described…some crazy side effects.

Reglan is scary, I wouldn’t use it… but it is used to help with delayed gastric emptying so I would concerned that your doctor prescribed it for choking… I might look into finding another doctor! And push for Zantac if you think the baby needs it, it is very safe!
November 2, 2010 at 5:48 pm #67251hellbenntKeymasterWelcome!I have a LOT to say, & most of it is here, in a link called Groupie Intro:this is looong, but please read/scroll/skim through it and refer back to it often, as it TRULY will help you.there is info about WHY a baby might get reflux, about reflux and how it might be related to diet/allergies/intolerances (these are to PROTEINS in breastmilk or formula, proteins such as milk and/or soy)…there is a link to finding a ped GIthere is a link called ‘Prevacid 101’ – read this as it tells about zantac dosing, too and also prilosec…basically, there is a LOT of info to help you & we’re here, too!hang in there & so glad you found us!I would TELL dr you want zantac.I’d calculate the highest dose for weight- this is explained here:Then I wouldn’t ask, I’d TELL dr the dose you need, using the information from the link above…Then I would check out http://www.marci-kids.com and figure out the PROPER dose for your baby& then I would check outPrevacid 101 (last post on the page) and read all about PPIs (prilosec, prevacid):then I would decide what FORM of prevacid (or prilosec) to try.Personally, I would go for (& did go for) Bufferbabies (it’s explained in prevacid 101)…once you start w/ a PPI, I’d make sure to give the zantac, too, making sure to give it 4hrs seperate from the prilosec/prevacid/PPI.May 27, 2011 at 1:34 pm #68436AnonymousInactiveMy dd gags and chokes too sometimes during and after a feeding. It was pretty bad when she was first born and has gotten a lot better (she is 3 1/2 mos old) now she will do it mabye once a day and it’s usually when she is sleepy. She is on zantac 3x a day 1ml
May 30, 2011 at 10:37 am #68464AnonymousInactiveMy dd had similar issues. She was a massive spitter and her choking was related to the spitting up. In our case, it was due to her formula. She was on Alimentum. Alimentum has a different viscosity than other formulas (it’s a little thicker/stickier), so it would get stuck in her throat when she would spit up.
My younger dd had silent reflux (so, no spitting), and she had similar issues.May 31, 2011 at 9:31 am #68465AnonymousInactiveMy dd was on 6 formulas before we tried nutramigen and that was the winner (thank goodnes!) Within 2 days she was a completely different baby and after a few weeks I decided to try the alimentum thinking they were the same and apparently they are not because teh 2 days she was on it she cried, was gassy and the reflux was worse; she could not digest it. A friend of mine had a similiar experience. I quickly switched her back to nutramigen and we have been good ever since
