Yikes, thank you Joel!! Thank goodness I’ve only been doing it wrong for a day 🙂 I hate to think that I could have screwed this up for her. Once again, Joel to the rescue!!

Haden does best with a dose in the AM (6:30ish or whatever time he wakes up) and then 2:30 and then before bed at 7:00. It seemed in the beginning that afternoons and early evenings were the worst for him. At times I would give the PPI around 5:00 and then give Pepcid(similar to Zantac) right before his bedtime. You will find that typically if the dose is right it will give you excellent 24 hour coverage and the doses don’t necessarily need to be split up equally.
Also, you can mix 2- 20 mg packages with 13mls of water.
We asked our pharmacist for a large syringe and 3 small ones. I mix a large batch and fill up my 3 syringes for the day. Ask for tip caps if they have them- they are great for the diaper bag, babysitters, etc. Zegerid is super easy! At first, you feel like you are performing a science experiment

April 11, 2006 at 9:49 pm #5949AnonymousInactiveThanks Joel,
It is all very clear to me now……Everything just gets so muddled up in my head when I am dealing with the Dr.’s, pharmacists, and insurance people.

May 9, 2006 at 2:17 pm #7751AnonymousInactiveHi, my name is Kristen. I just found this site (actually a few hours ago) and think I have finally found the help I’ve been looking for.
First of all I need to ask…who is Joel? I have figured out that you for for MARCI-kids…but are you a doctor?
Ok, so here’s my deal. I have 4 month old twins who were 10 weeks old. They have reflux. First they were on zantac, then the ped put them on prevacid packs where I had to mix it at home. Friday the ped gas. put them on prevacid solutabs. With the powder my twins seemed to get better at first, than worse. My son is in pain all the time. Both vomit. Kaylee was vomitting before the meds, but Conor started after the prevacid. I am convinced that it is the meds.
I want to try zegrid but how do I convince the doctors? What is the dosing info? They are 4 months. Connor is 11 lbs 8 oz and Kaylee is 8 lbs 3 oz. Also..am I understanding that I shouldn’t have it compuned at the pharmacy I should do it at home? Where do I get the caracream from?
Sorry this is so long. Thank,
Kristen
May 9, 2006 at 3:13 pm #7757AnonymousInactiveI just started my little one on the Zegerid and since the start of it, he has decreased his bottles and has started vomiting after I give it to him so I am now going to take him off of it. I wonder if he is vomiting it and then all of his bottle comes up to, because of the horrible taste or can he just not handle the medicine. I thought it may be a virus but he his just happy as a lark once he vomits all of the medicine out of him even when he is only taking 2 ounces at a time. He has only had 5.5 ounces today because he is associating the bottle with the Zegerid medicine. I just posted this because I noticed that Kim said her little one vomited after she gave her the medicine. Joel is vomiting a side effect of the medication?

May 9, 2006 at 7:12 pm #7769hellbenntKeymasterKristen,
Welcome!
I have a lot to say & it’s here – bookmark it as it’s loong and will continue to help you after your first perusal https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;am p;am p;PN=1&TPN=1
most of your questions are answered from the link above– look for the link ‘Prevacid 101’ and from there you’ll find most of what you asked about…
as for the spitting, sometimes once the pain is gone a silent refluxer will turn to spitting bcse it’s not painful and they maybe ‘forget’ to swallow it back down? not sure of the exact reason, but many have posted that their non spitter started spitting on meds- the meds will not help with spitting, only help with the pain (& acid production)
glad you found us!

May 10, 2006 at 6:48 pm #7846AnonymousInactiveI’m confused on the Prevacid dosing instructions. According to prevacid 101 I should be giving my son 1.25-1.5 mg 3 times a day. I have 15mg solutabs…how do I do that?
Kristen
May 10, 2006 at 6:58 pm #7848hellbenntKeymasterare you sure it’s not 1.25-1.5mg per kilo (kg)?
from the site: 1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per day
how much does your son weigh?
May 10, 2006 at 9:38 pm #7857AnonymousInactiveMy son weighs 11 lbs 7 oz probally closer to 12 lbs now, that weight was from last Monday.
May 11, 2006 at 8:50 pm #7913hellbenntKeymasterok 12lbs divided by 2.2 will give you kilos- so it’s 5.5kilos
and you say it’s 1.25 – 1.5mg per kilo
so if you do 1.25, on the ‘low side’ it’s: 5.5 x 1.25 = 6.9mgs
and to make that 3x a day, that’s 6.9 x 3 = 20.7mgs per day, total for the day, on the ‘low side’
Now for the ‘high’ side: 5.5 x 1.5 = 8.25
& to make that 3x a day, that’s 8.25 x 3 = 24.75 mgs per day, total for the day, on the ‘high side’
so with 15mg solutabs: you give a whole one, which is 15mgs, plus one half of one (7.5mgs) = 22.5, which is a dose right in the ‘middle’ & you can always increase from there…
from prevacid 101 read about how to administer them and when to administer them…
