InactiveWell, we have our new baby back once again. I aksed him where he had gone to, but of course since he can’t talk, he just starred at me with a blank face.
I took it upon myself to increase our dosage slightly which has done wonders.
Thank you again to all who have helped me out. I am sure I will pop back on periodically to touch base.

InactiveHello all, just when I think I am going to be good for awhile, something comes up and of course this is the first place I think of. That is of course because the web site http://www.HelpMyChildWontPoop.org has not been started just yet.
Well, the cat is out of the bag. Now we have moved from Silent Reflux which seems to be under control to 3 days of no ‘movement’ which is causing my poor son some great pain as he tries to pass, something… anything.
Any suggestions here or is this something we just have to deal with and be patient?
Thanks

InactiveHe’s on Prevacid, right? Consitpation and/or diarrhea are the most common side effects of most medications. Fortunately this side effect often passes once the body adjusts to the medication.
For now you can try some natural remedies. My son had chronic consitipation problems (probably due to DGE) and I was able to keep him regular with the following remedies.
1. Prunes. (1/2 of a stage one container daily added to his oatmeal or bottle. It dissolves just fine in a bottle of milk or formula).
2. Pear Juice. (1 ounce pear juice with one ounce of water daily). If he’s taking a bottle you can add an ounce of pear juice to his formula. I did this when Myles was on the bottle. He never noticed the difference.
3. Flax Seed Oil (1 Tablespoon daily added to oatmeal or just give orally by spoon).
4. Benefiber. 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon daily. Make sure you give it with fluids -add to bottle or sippy cup of milk, juice, etc. It dissolves easily and it’s tasteless, and odorless.
My son’s constipation issue was severe and chronic so I used all of these remedies daily. You may be able to use just one or two and see results. Also a quick remedy that often works is brown sugar and water. I’d dissolve 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of brown sugar with an ouce of warm water and then give it to him by spoon or syringe. This worked often, but not always.
Good luck. I hope this new problem resolves quickly.

InactiveChristine, Those are some really great ideas. Luke is constipated right now and I had forgotten about doing the benefiber.
Qman let us know if any of them work for you. Good luck. My first was constipated all the time and when he needs an adjustment from the chiro he gets constipated again. I hope one of those remedies works for you.

InactiveAssuming that you’ve tried one of those remedies by now, if there are no results by tomorrow then I’d try something a little more “drastic”. In the meantime, you can put a bit of vaseline on a q-tip and- get ready for this one- “stimulate the rectum”- as we were told…. lovely, I know. (Just go around the outside though, I don’t think that you’re actually supposed to put it in, but don’t quote me.) Sometimes this works.
I can’t remember how old your son is, but if he’s really small, you probably won’t want to give flax seed oil or prunes as solids, but that is just my opinion. Adding oil to a bottle can cause aspiration of oil into the lungs if it’s not swallowed properly, and if I remember correctly, he’s not at the age where he’s doing soilids yet. We tried prune juice mixed in with some formula, and we also tried a bit of pear juice. The truth is, though, that we found that most of those things were very good preventative agents, but not great for when things had gone beyond the “point of no return”, as we called it… for Hailey, that was day 4 of no poop. Once we reached day 4, it was already so hard that nothing short of a missile up the bum (as my husband lovingly called a glycerin suppository was going to get that poop out. Once we got to day 5 when Hailey was 3 months old, and the ped made me take her to the ER to get her disimpacted with a fleet enema. Oh, the horror…
If he doesn’t go by tomorrow, which I assume is day 4, I would personally use a glycerin suppository to help clean him out. Our doc had us use the tip (about 1/3 of the actual suppository when Hailey was really small). He’s formula fed, right? If so, then no bm for more then 4 days probably means that he has something hard in there that he just can’t pass.
Once he gets the hard poop out, then I’d work on prevention. I really like benefiber- like Christine said, it’s odourless and tasteless and dissolves really well in formula. I wish it was out there when Hailey was a baby. If things remain chronic, and the usual remedies don’t work, then you can always try miralax which is a miracle for chronic constipation. It’s now gone OTC in the US, I believe, and so that might be something to discuss with your doc if it gets to that point.
Hope you see some poop soon. Good luck.

InactiveBrown sugar in water, brown sugar in formula, brown sugar in food (whicheever one works). Usually 1/2 tsp for Alana. Its an old wifes tail, and my mum and her mum and everyones mum used it. I find that it works. (She’s already inherited a sweet tooth from me so I’m not doing any added damage

InactiveOur GI suggested 1/4 tsp of Milk of Magnesia. The Phillips Brand comes in yummy flavors. You may want to check with your doc before trying it, but it’s just another suggestion. It worked wonders for Landen when he was backed up for 3-4 days when I was adding rice to his formula (which I no longer do b/c he just cannot tolerate anything but neocate)
Good luck!
