InactiveMy little one just turned a month old on Nov 30th. All I can say about this past month is mommy boot camp….its kicking my butt. From the get go we have experienced both feeding and sleeping issues associated with his acid reflux. The doctor prescriped him zantac and suggested some at home things to change such as burping him more often while feeding, elevating him more while eating, elevate his mattress, changing to thicker formula to help with the projectile vomit, etc.
Some issues that I am still experiencing are from transitioning at night from sleeping in his swing to his elevated bassinett…congestion during the early morning hours that wake him and terrify me (sounds like he can’t breath). Any suggestions for the congestion in the morning…I don’t see any blockage in his nose.???Also, the one issue since switching to the thicker formula is that while he is sleeping he wakes himself up by turning red and grunting as to dirty his diaper. After he finishes up grunting I check his diaper to find its clean. He does this often! Have a doctors appointment for a simple check up & will ask about this, but didn’t know if anybody else was having the same issue…& if it is something to be concerned about.December 2, 2009 at 4:36 pm #64839Anonymous
Inactivefor the congestion…. in the morning (but this is after he wakes up). I use the baby nasal spray and spay in nose and then suck out with nose sucker. I actually did buy one of those electric one when it was really bad one time but not much clearing happen. I know what you are talkiing about with the coughing and waking you up. my little one did that to me too. I do put her to sleep on her side.
Also the Zantac alone didn’t work for us we had to go to Zantac and Prevacid. Have you gone to a GI doc appt yet.All the other things you are doing are good. The formula thing I’m not sure of I am currently breast feeding. Sounds like constipation.December 2, 2009 at 6:52 pm #64844hellbennt
Keymastersaline is ok, but you don’t need to suck it out- just let gravity do it’s thing

(‘they’ say that if you suck it out it only irritates the nose more & then it produces even more mucous)the grunting and straining sounds like he’s not too happy with the thickening. stop the thickening. it is not necessarily something you *have* to do…if he’s having an issue with gaining weight then maybe you might need the calories from thickening, but, if this is the case, then the dr would help you figure out a formula mixture w/ increased calories…
if stopping the thickening doesn’t help w/ the grunting, then it could be the formula itself…constipation is when the stool is hard, like pebbles. if it’s soft, then it’s fine and not constipation. the grunting and soft stools can be a sign of an intolerance to a protein- so that’s why I suggest first seeing if it’s the added cereal and then see if it’s the formula itself…
next, I would check the zantac dose. my educated guess is that the zantac dose can be increased. read here:

InactiveThank you for all the helpful advise & links. This is my first child so everything terrifies me. I know at the hospital they had told me it was normal for a baby to sound congested…not sure how long this is suppose to last. Also, the sound of him gasping for air through his mouth and not being able to take in any air through his nose is frightening. Glad it is only during the early morning hours and not all day. I am certain there are going to be more experiences like these.
It all comes with motherhood. I will certainly ask to see if the saline will help with my little guy. Anything to give me a better rest at night. The grunting doesn’t seem to bother him too much that is why I have not been too concerned about it. Not sure if I should be or not. I did notice that it started recently with the thicker formula. Though he is having plunty of dirty diapers and its the right consistancy. Just most recently I have been concerned when he grunts for sometime without pushing anything out. Do not want him to hurt himself by straining so long.It is my hopes that my questions help other moms out there. I am certain I am not the only one experiencing these issues. All update everyone on the doctors appointment tomorrow.December 3, 2009 at 7:54 am #64863hellbennt
Keymastergrunting & straining lead me to issues w/ proteiiins. like I said try no cereal and then if that doesn’twork move toward another formula
