I can’t decide whether to freak out about the new BPA findings or not. I do all of the things it says not to do – wash my Dr. Brown’s in the dishwasher and microwave them.
We also give Amanda the RTF Nutramigen because it tends to have less air in it than when we mix the powder. Now we’re also hearing that there are BPA risks in RTF cans. What is a reflux parent to do? I switched to an Avent bottle the other day and the amount of air intake was awful. I feel like Amanda needs the Dr. Brown’s bottles, but I’m not sure I’m willing to take chances with the glass bottles. I know I have dropped many a bottle at 2 AM as a walking zombie! Also, what about later when the baby starts to hold the bottle themselves and drops it?And what about the RTF? I hate the thought of having to go back to powder and introducing more air into her tummy. What are your thoughts on this issue? Is it time to “freak out”? Should we take a “wait and see” approach?April 24, 2008 at 3:05 pm #50793AnonymousInactiveHere is my thought on BPA. Yes, there is BPA in bottles, but it is in MANY other plastics as well. There is BPA in the bottles that bottled water is in. If you ever let one of these get hot (like in your car or the grocery store stockroom) BPA is introduced into the water.
Here is my two cents. My MIL called me right after this whole BPA thing started and was freaking out. I told her that if I was going to be concerned and switch bottles, I would also have to NEVER heat anything for my child EVER in a plastic container. Unfortunately, plastic is just a part of my family’s daily life. Maybe I should be more concerned, but I’m not. My ds likes his bottles (Soothie) and I am unwilling to change, b/c he feeds so well.It is your child and your child’s body.April 24, 2008 at 3:13 pm #50797AnonymousInactiveOkay so we aren’t on bottles still but I didn;t even think about changing them when the news came out. We were using Avent bottles before we saw the ped gi and switched to the Dr brown’s and things were so much better on the dr browns that there was no way I was going back to avent. Now I will say that I maybe only twice put them in the dishwasher and I never microwaved the bottles, the insides but not the bottles so I figured I was at least helping some. But hey you gotta do what makes your baby comfortable. About the formula. We used concentrate and powder. With both I did notice more bubbles with the powder but I would put a dropper or 2 of gas drops in the formula and that eats up the bubbles. You may want to try that vs using the RTF which is ridiculously expensive too. Cooper’s mom2008-04-24 15:14:50

BPA is also in our drinking water and fetal blood at levels near those found in that study.
That being said, what would I do if I had another baby? If I could afford it I’d get the born free plastic bottles. They cost a fortune, but they have a venting system and they’re BPA free. That way you don’t have to worry (or hear it from everyone every time they see you with an avent bottle!).April 24, 2008 at 5:17 pm #50809AnonymousInactiveWe haven’t changed bottles (or sippy cups) but we now warm everything in non plastic containers. We pour Paige’s Neocate into a pyrex cup measure to warm it, then pour it into the bottle. We also don’t put bottles/sippy cups in the dishwahser and wash them by hand.
I used to microwave some food in plastic dishes, but I now warm everything in either glass or corelle. It’s just as easy, and perhaps it’s safer – who really knows, but it can’t hurt!April 24, 2008 at 8:57 pm #50818AnonymousInactiveZRecs BPA-Free Shortlist:FYI-
