So my ds is still having major symptoms–arching/crunching at every bottle except the first one, terrible diaper rash, crying/uncomfy all day long, and 2 or 3 20-30 min naps/day. I finally talked to the GI today, and she said it “could be the rice cereal” and to start thickening with oatmeal instead. What does that mean if it’s the rice cereal? Does that mean an allergy or an intollerance…could it be celiac or something else? Is this something like the milk and soy that he’ll grow out of?
Also, I mentioned it to Beth in another post, I’m thinking of using Simply Thick instead to take out all those extra calories and any other irritant factor, does anyone else use it?Thanks!December 10, 2009 at 7:34 am #65026hellbenntKeymasterit’s that he’s young- he’s not ‘meant’ to be digesting cereal….it’s hard…
hugs.December 10, 2009 at 8:10 am #65029AnonymousInactiveDenise, I am unfortunately suspecting a rice intolerance in Madden as well. I think Erin said her LO had a rice intolerance too. It’s actually pretty common. I’ve been on TED since 10/30 and still seeing major mucousy diapers. The only thing I eat everyday in MASS quantities is rice. Rice milk, rice cereal, rice cakes, rice flour. I’m actually at a loss and trying to just transition to just Neocate. So, I definitely think rice could be a factor.

He would get 100x worse if we tried to give him rice cereal as a baby. He did OK on Oatmeal, but only after 9 months of age. To this day, he can only drink coconut milk or potato milk. I think simply thick is a great idea of you need to thicken. It is so hard for our babies to digest grains! Good luck!
February 23, 2010 at 3:50 pm #65893AnonymousInactiveWe started with oatmeal cereal instead of rice because it is less constipating and DS does well with it… but he also has MSPI, so we have to get soy-free cereals. All the gerber cereals have soy in them. Try using beechnut brand and see if that helps.
February 23, 2010 at 4:07 pm #65895AnonymousInactiveI didn’t see this earlier… yes, Evan was rice intolerant until about 11mths old. Tate is also rice intolerant (so far just through my breastmilk). It shouldn’t mean celiac for your ds as rice is not a gluten (Evan is suspected celiac). Hope that helps!
February 23, 2010 at 5:46 pm #65898AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear. It’s all such a mystery sometimes. We never used simply thick, but I remember others on here who did use it with luck. Can’t recall why you need to thicken? Is it to try to keep it down, or because he’s aspirating?
February 24, 2010 at 7:48 pm #65924AnonymousInactiverice can be really hard to digest as it can be constipating (not necessarily an intolerance or allergy) we did oatmeal successfully with carter so that is an option, simply thick as well but not sure of the cost?

I started my little on on Rice Cereal (Organic Earth’s Best) and you can tell she is heading down that dreaded road again. We started it on Monday and she hasn’t pooped since! Doing a lot of passing stinky gas! I didn’t give her any tonight as I will try Oatmeal instead.I was so anxious to start the cereals to help her sleep but of course not and now it causes other issues!I kind of lost it this afternoon – Just when you think it is getting better something else happens.February 25, 2010 at 8:55 pm #65941AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear the rice didn’t work out- I was really hoping it would work for you.
Good luck with the oatmeal! -
