Could it be Solutabs??

OK, some of you already know my little Jay’s history. He has been poorly nursing since he was 3 mo old. Finally last month he was dx with silent reflux and put on prevacid 15 mg powder packet once a day. Immediately his nursing habit improved. He started asking for nursing and he was emptying my breasts, ya! both sides. Now we are back to square one with him refusing, fighting, not emptying my breasts, only nursing on one side for only 2-3 mins. I called the dr and I got the dose increased to 15 mg two times times a day. Still not nursing well. It has been 12 days I have not seen any difference.

I had such a hard time giving him the powder packets so I asked the dr to change it to solutabs 13 days ago (3 wks after using powder pkts).

Last night I was going through my journal, I noticed that the day he started refusing to nurse was the day after he started solutabs. And still has not nursed well, today he only nursed once that was for 6min and to go to sleep, I am so sad and frustrated. Now I’m thinking could it be the solutabs that’s not working because I know he did nurse better for 3 wks.

the only way that i could think of why the solutabs “would not be working” is if you are
a) not administering it correctly
b) his dose is not high enough.

you have to give it on an empty stomach and follow up with a full meal 30 min – 1 hour later.

Yes, I do give it to him 2hrs after and 30 min to 1 hr before feeding. I did the same thing with the powder pkts too.

ok this is what was happening with my son;he was on the highest zegerid dose and still in a ton of pain. i figured out he was really MSPI and couldnt handle any milk or soy formulas. when a baby is MSPI and they are on milk or soy, it actually damages the GI tract and the reflux flairs up like crazy. there is an artcle on here that i read that made me realize my son needed neocate. once i switched him, he was better within a few bottles, it was amazing.

maybe it’s the aspertame in the solutabs, but then I’d think if he was so sensitive then he would have reacted to the strawberry flavoring in the packets? hmm…?

The only thing I have eliminated is dairy. If he was still allergic to other things I ate, what about those 3 wks?? I thought I was finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel…

have you eaten anything w/ ‘hidden’ dairy (casen, whey, etc etc)?

Dylan was AWFUL on the solutabs. It is rare, as a lot of babies do well on them, but it was either the lactose or the aspertime that he did not do well with. If you are noticing the worse behavior in coorelation to the starting of the solutabs, I would try another form of prevacid. Maybe the beads in applesauce? That way you are eliminating any other ingredients in the Prevacid to try to figure out what the problem is or isn’t……

I would go back to the packets and see what happens. I think every baby is different. Brianna did great on the solutabs, but she couldn’t handle Zegerid to save her life. My motto with Brianna is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. It sounds like the packets were better for your LO for whatever reason.

I do have some packets left so I gave it to him this morning, it was like pulling a tooth. We did waste some, you know the packet says do not mix with anything else but water. Can I mix it with applesause??

I don’t think so but you can get the plain capsules and put those in applesauce…..

you can also strain out the beads from the packet and somehow give just those…I think there’s info about this from ‘Prevacid 101’

You could get a little tea strainer, strain the strawberry stuff out and you are just left with the beads- then put these in the applesauce. Also, as I posted elsewhere, I make the packets up and then syringe of most of the syrup (the beads naturall fall to the bottom) and i only end up having to give the beads in about 5-6mls of syrup. So much easier to give.

I have to try straining the packet, that is my last hope. This evening was also a nightmere.
