yesterday morning Seth had some peanut butter toast for breakfast. He has had peanut butter before with no noticeable reactions but last night and today, he has the rosiest cheeks that look wind or sun burned and he woke up last night about 5 times kicking and screaming.
Also, yesterday when I dropped him off at school, he ran out in the hall, got in a corner and was bawling that he wanted to go home. At the time, I thought this was maybe because he was out all last week with the flu and just got used to being home but now maybe I am wondering if this is all related.Mom2Seth 2008-02-15 11:06:57 February 13, 2008 at 7:19 pm #48205AnonymousInactivehmm.. i wouldnt think it was the peanut butter in the peanut butter toast, since he has had peanut butter before. maybe there is something else in the toast upsetting him?? am i right in saying “peanut butter toast”?? where do you find that?!
February 14, 2008 at 1:41 am #48207AnonymousInactiveThis could be a “phenol sensitivity” type reaction. Peanuts are one of a number of foods high in phenols, and some people have a hard time processing phenols. One of the most common and most visible symptoms is extremely flushed cheeks, face and ears. (Ben gets this after eating some fruits or fruit juices) I know some kids can also become hyperactive and don’t sleep as well after eating high-phenol foods.
February 14, 2008 at 9:46 am #48210AnonymousInactivethanks ladies, it was a different brand of pnut butter and he had more than usual but it also dawned on me last night that he has also been sleeping on a new pillow case. It is new and is dry clean only so I did not wash it when we got it like I normally would have so I am thinking that may be it too although it wouldn’t explain the other reactions. At any rate, I decided to wash the pillow case on the gentle cyle anyway and see if that makes a difference with his cheeks.
I haven’t completely ruled out the pnut butter though and will definitely be very cautious if I decide to give it to him again. I will have to google phenol reactions because that sounds like a real possibility.
Lauren, pnut butter toast is just where you toast normal bread and spread pnut butter on it instead of butter. Maybe it is a southern thing!February 14, 2008 at 11:18 am #48212AnonymousInactiveHailey has those kind of skin reactions too. They’re especially bad when she has a virus on top of it. Recently we’ve noticed that if she has a cold and wipes her snot on her face, that also gives her a bad cheek rash. I would also be cautious about the peanut butter again though…. I don’t know too much about ANA reactions, but I’ve heard that the second time is worse than the first.
About the pillowcases… I had to laugh at them being dry clean only! What are they made of??? Sounds luxurious!February 14, 2008 at 12:28 pm #48216AnonymousInactiveI did some research online about phenol sensitivity. Seth defnitely has several of the symptons – some of which I have been concerned about lately like agressiveness.
I am worried about a worse reaction next time too so I think we are going to stay away from the pnut butter. I was talking to DH and I believe we are going to take Seth back to the allergist. I know intolerances won’t show up but I think we need to at least rule allergies out.
Lori, don’t let the dry clean only fool you. I think the reason they say that is because his new comforter and pillow sham have little felt appliques on them in the shape of sports stuff. If I had noticed they could not be washed when I bought them, I would have found something else. I am just hoping I didn’t totally shrink the pillow sham or worse by washing it. I guess I will find out tonight. This is off topic but relates to our sleeping issue. We finally decided to make the guest room that Seth has always pretty much slept in into his sleeping room and we are turning his other room into a playroom.February 14, 2008 at 2:30 pm #48221AnonymousInactiveAbout his new room- Oh wow! Is he happy with the change? Have you done it yet?
February 14, 2008 at 4:49 pm #48225AnonymousInactiveohh haha.. YES we do do peanut butter spread on toast.. its actually my favorite. But i just have never heard of the phrase “peanut butter toast” .. i was wondering if there was a peanut butter toast (bread)
February 14, 2008 at 5:12 pm #48227AnonymousInactiveWe’ve started using “No-Fenol” made by Houston Neutraceuticals for Ben so that he could process phenolic foods better. I think it really helps. A couple of times we have forgotten to add some to his juice, and within about 15 minutes his cheeks are really red, flushed and warm.
I’ve also heard that taking epsom salt baths can help with phenol reactions too. If nothing else, they can be soothing before bedtime!February 14, 2008 at 8:56 pm #48241hellbenntKeymasterFebruary 15, 2008 at 11:14 am #48254AnonymousInactiveWell, the verdict is in. Seth has Fifth’s disease (viral). His cheeks cleared up somewhat but now he has splotches on his legs and more so on his arms. I called his ped. this morning and talked with the nurse and she said he was a textbook case. I looked online and he looks exactly like the illustration. Luckily, he feels fine and is not contagious anymore.
I still suspect some food issues (often has the red cheeks and other symptons) but I am so thankful we are not dealing with a potential nut allergy!I do wish though we could go at least a week without being sick!!!!!Lori, I will PM you when I get a chance about his new big boy room.Mom2Seth2008-02-15 11:15:58
February 15, 2008 at 2:08 pm #48259AnonymousInactiveI’m glad you know the cause of the redness and rash and also glad that he’s feeling better!!
Don’t they give some of these viral infections the worst names?! Why must they be a “disease”? My niece once had hand, foot and mouth disease (also a viral infection) and I remember thinking the name of it sounded horrific!February 15, 2008 at 4:40 pm #48260AnonymousInactiveOh no! Over here they call it “slap-face”. I hope it goes away soon. Poor boy seems to have had a hard winter.
February 15, 2008 at 8:24 pm #48273AnonymousInactiveLOL! Slap face.. that’s just hilarious to me, Lori.
Sorry to hear that Seth is sick again, Tiffany, but I’m glad that it’s not more serious and that he is feeling better. -
