Could this be sensory integration probs?

My son screams when the sun is in his face or if wind is blowing in his face. I was reading one of the sites that said kids with sensory integration issues often play “like tornadoes.” He goes from one object to the next so fast. He is VERY intense and active. We have always thought that he was very hypersensitive to sounds when he was asleep. Is this something that therapy can cure if he does have it?

Isaac has sensory integration disorder and the symptoms of it are so different from one child to another. Therapy does help them learn to cope with the sensory issues. What helped me realize that it was the sensory issue was reading “The out of sync child”By Carol Stock Kranowitz.

i don’t like to have the sun or the wind in my face, either—-but i am also very sensitive to the way alot of things feel. i think that i feel things that other people don’t feel.

he is probably too young to make much of a judgement on something like that yet.

i think i ought to read that book about the out of sync child—-someone once suggested to me that i might have a sensory problem because i have to rock all the time—-i don’t sit still very well. (i can do it when i really have to, but if it is for too long i might get nutty)

it sounds like it ‘could’ be. Landen used to HATE the wind in his face and now he is ok and able to tolerate it. It could very well be sensory issues. I also notice Landen throwing his weight around, throwing himself into things and people and going quickly from one thing to the next (just as you described your son) and i have read that it could be sensory too. My older DS has major sensory issues, so I do worry about Landen, but am kind of waiting to see if he outgrows some of it on his own. It is very hard to identify sensory issues vs. “a phase”.

My son Garrett has Sensory Integration Disorder. I agree with Sarah that if you have concerns that you should read through “The Out of Sync Child”By Carol Stock Kranowitz.

I just saw that your son is not a year old yet. The book may not be applicable yet, but keep a note of the title for future reference.

We didn’t have an explanation for Garrett’s “issues” until he went in for an occupational evaluation for choking. They are required to test everything, not just eating, so it was during this evaluation that he was diagnosed. He was 2 at the time.

He had tactile issues such as not wanting to fingerpaint, not wanting to wear socks and shoes, tags in clothes driving him crazy.

Unlike my older son who always had a sense of “home base”, Garrett would always run fast and never look back.

So if I were you, I would start taking notes and jot down these behaviors that you are noticing and keep a record of them. Then at your next checkup, mention your concerns to the pediatrician. He or she will know when the time is right to send your son for an evaluation if it is deemed necessary.

My son Ben has some symptoms of sensory integration disorder as well. A lot of it has to do with food, but he also doesn’t like getting his hands dirty, doesn’t like tight-fitting cuffs around his wrists or ankles, socks, etc. Paige is showing some symptoms as well, as she doesn’t like to be touched much, and has similar dislikes as her brother when it comes to clothing.

Some kids can also be sensory seekers – need to feel certain textures, need to make lots of noise, want lots of touch, etc.

If you have concerns, just keep an eye on it and make note of it for future reference since he is still very young. If necessary, therapy is available that has helped many children and their families.
