We were recently switched over from losec 20mg to prevacid 22.5mg. For a few days prior to this switch, I started giving hailey capsules of her losec as she wouldn’t take the compound. The first morning I started giving her prevacid, she refused her feed, since then she has continued refusing feeds, but has also been up all night! She’s waking up at night SCREAMING, which is rare for her- usually she just wakes up whimpering, not screaming. Could these symptoms be the prevacid? Should I stop it and go back to the losec? Or do you think I should give it the full 2 weeks? I’m afraid of continuing this nightwaking habit for too long because it will be harder to break it. What do you think?
I just wanted to add that refusing feeds for Hailey is not totally uncommon and usually happens every few months.

I wrote a post a long time ago when we first started the prevacid… Matthew seemed to be in pain and really really gassy and would wake up at night, not screaming, but just fussing and fussing… those signs went away after 10 days or so..
I know that there have been some posts about fussiness and prevacid but i think that it was always related to the solutabs… not sure, may want to do a search..
Sorry you are having such a tough time still!
March 5, 2006 at 1:01 pm #3072hellbenntKeymasterwhat form of prevacid? capsules? hmmm…
if she was on the losec prior to the switch, it shouldn’t take a long time for the prevacid to work…the side effects of fussiness, like Thais wrote, are most often from the solutabs and side effects having to do w/ loose stools or constipation, for just an adjustment time, have been reported with prevacid…
March 5, 2006 at 1:43 pm #3074AnonymousInactiveThanks guys, looks like something else might be going on. Will post in the help section…
March 5, 2006 at 2:21 pm #3079AnonymousInactiveWe had pretty much the same reaction to prevacid both times that we used it. He would get really gassy and scream and wake up alot at night. My ped gi said that there is also a lapse between ppi’s when you switch them of the 1-2 weeks. I hope you figure out what is wrong soon!
March 6, 2006 at 10:48 am #3097AnonymousInactiveAre you mixing it with the CaraCream or ChocoBase yet?
March 6, 2006 at 11:17 am #3102AnonymousInactiveI would doubt it’s the Prevacid if she’s already tolerating a PPI. I suppose it could be but seems like a long shot to me.
March 6, 2006 at 2:11 pm #3108AnonymousInactiveYes, Joel- we’re using it now. We only started with the CaraCream on Friday night. (Don’t ask, it got held at the border or something and we had to pay $40 dollars to customs as brokerage. Thank you though, it is finally here which I am very thankful for!!)
She has been taking the CaraCream in her milk- not sucking it back at full force, but accepting it. I hope (pray) that she will get used to it, but definitely LESS BITTER than when we tried it with losec- in fact it’s not bitter at all. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but whenever I prepare her dose, it smells so good that it makes my mouth water. I tasted the granules on their own and they have no taste, whereas the ones from the losec were terrible.
I wanted to ask you about measuring it. I know that after it’s been in the fridge it tends to thicken to an icing consistency. Should I be taking it out of the fridge for a bit to get it thin again before measuring it? If so, how long should I leave it out- I don’t want to degrade the medicine?
Also, how long can it sit unrefrigerated in her milk before the drug will degrade?
Thanks so much again for helping me out- I’m going to order some this week to make sure we have more (I don’t know how long this bottle will last).
March 6, 2006 at 5:36 pm #3112AnonymousInactiveGrrrrr… I told them not to put a high value on the package when I gave it to the mail services. I’m sorry that you had to pay that customs fee.
Yes, I would set it out for about 10 minutes before giving it so that it thins out a little. You can also add a few mLs of water to it and shake it up if it starts getting too thick.
I wouldn’t leave it in her milk for more than an hour or so, but I’d have to ask Dr Phillips to be absolutely sure.
I’m glad to hear that it tastes much better with the Prevacid. Let me know if you need anything else!
March 6, 2006 at 6:23 pm #3113hellbenntKeymaster(oooh, we LOVED caracream around here!!! I say it tastes like a white chocolate, or yogurt, covered pretzle)
March 6, 2006 at 9:10 pm #3115AnonymousInactiveThanks Joel. It doesn’t sit in the milk for that long, but sometimes around 20 minutes or so till she finishes drinking it. How do I how much water to add. It seems quite thick already. Amost like cake icing.
Also, I want to buy a bunch of kits so we have them on hand. How do I do that?
Laura, the smell alone is delicious (though much better with prevacid I have to admit)…to me it tastes like caramel covered popcorn.
March 7, 2006 at 10:18 am #3146AnonymousInactiveLori,
Leaving the bottle out of the fridge for 10 minutes should help it to thin out considerably, but if you still need to add water, you can add up to 5 mL without affecting the concentration too much. Just email me about ordering more: [email protected].
