InactiveI’m still waiting for the Prevacid to kick in for Alison. For those of you that said it took up to two weeks to work, was it a gradual improvement or all of a sudden they started eating again? She’s still refusing bottles and I do have her on Zantac as well…

InactiveI didn’t have the problem of her not taking her bottles, just major pain, arching, and fussiness. It was day #12 when I noticed a change. Are you splitting the dose 2x a day and giving it 30 mins before trying to feed her. Also, on an emtpy stomach? My child has had feeding reffusal at times, we are in feeding therapy for this. We started at around 4 months. I didn’t know that the speech pathologist start seeing babies even preemies in the hospital. Hope you start seeing some results soon! Hang in there!

InactiveBeth, are you giving the Prevacid at least 2 hrs away from the Zantac. Some say it should even be 4 hrs. (I’m not sure…maybe someone else knows).
Also, did you check the marci-kids.com site to make sure she is on the right dose for her age and weight? How much does she weigh?
Here’s the link to check on the dosage http://www.marci-kids.com/
15 mg may not be enough. You can also email Joel at Reflux Solutions and he will tell you the correct dose. Here’s his email andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu

InactiveI do give it twice a day 30 minutes before meals. But sometimes I can only get an ounce or two into her so I don’t know if it’s as effective as it should be. For the Zantac I try to give it as far away from Prevacid as possible – at least two hours but preferably three or four. Maybe I should be more diligent about spacing it out.
How much Zantac do you give? My ped had dosed her at 3 ml 2x day (15 mg per ml compounded). The ped GI was horrified at that dose and said she should have only had 0.5 ml 3x day. He also wanted me to stop the Zantac but she stopped eating when I did that so I added it back in but am unsure how much to give. I would give the lower dose but I’m afraid it won’t do anything as she had probably become accustomed to the higher dose. But I’m afraid to give the higher dose…
She’s only 8 lbs. so I think 15 mg Prevacid is pretty close to being accurate.

KeymasterI don’t have the link handy, but from my welcome/intro there’s zantac dosing info (also PPI dosing info)

zantc dosing is 5mg- 10mg per kilo- I’m doing this off the top of my head- check me to make sure! 8/2.2 = 3.6 kilos
3.6 x 5 = 18mgs per day, total on the ‘low side’ &
3.6 x 10 = 36mgs a day total on the ‘high side’ and divide these numbers of mg by 15 to get how many mls a day:
18/15 = 1.2 mls a day, total (divided into 3 doses) on the ‘low side’ &
36/15= 2.4mls a day, total (divided into 3 doses) on the ‘high side’
so the 3mls a day s 3 = 9mls a day was kinda ‘high…’

InactiveBeth, according to the marci-kids info Alison should be getting (Prevacid) 1.25 – 1.5 mg per kg three times per day. That amts to 4.5 – 5.45 mg three times per day. So, the 15 mg is probably fine, but maybe it would work better if you split it up and gave her 1/3 of a tablet three times per day. My son initially was only getting Prevacid twice per day and he didn’t improve until we started giving it to him three times per day. Babies metablolize this medication so much faster than adults, so giving it to them three times per day helps.
My son gets 10mg 3 times per day, so I have to divide his dose into thirds also. I just take three tiny rubbermaid containers and carefully break them and drop them into their individual containers. You may not get it perfect, but when you lay them out in the three containers you can eyeball it and get them as close as you can.
