I’m currently reading a book on reflux in which the author feels that there is not genetic cause for infant reflux. He goes on to state that the likelyhood of having a second child with reflux is low.
I tend to disagree with this. So out of curiousity, I would like to see what your situation is.If you have had more than one child with reflux, please post a reply telling how many children you have, how many had reflux and which child ( child #1, child #2, etc. ).If you have only had one child with reflux, please pot a reply teling how many children you have and which child had the reflux ( child #1, child #2, etc. )Also – please state whether you had colic/reflux as an infant and whether you still have problems as an adult. Thanks!ForumAdmin 2008-04-24 13:47:05 April 24, 2008 at 1:45 pm #50784AnonymousInactiveI have had 3 children.
All 3 have had reflux!Child #1Child #2Child #3My mother said I had “colic” as an infant, but it was probably reflux. I still have problems with reflux as an adult and have to take Prilosec. I had terrible reflux when I was pregnant each time.My grandmother says my mother was a very “fussy” baby as well and had to be walked at nights. My grandmother takes Prilosec for reflux. So I definitely feel there is a genetic link!ForumAdmin2008-04-24 13:48:24
April 24, 2008 at 2:25 pm #50786AnonymousInactiveInteresting poll- Seth is an only child so I could not vote but I was just wondering myself this morning how many of us may have had undiagnosed reflux as a child. I do not suffer from reflux now, but I was “colicky” as an infant. I remember my mom telling me she left me with my aunt once and she called my mom to come get me because she could not get me to stop crying (she was an experienced mom with 3 kids!).
I also believe there is a genetic role- both of my parents, paternal grandparents and 3 siblings are all on meds for reflux! How I escaped it is beyond me. I often wonder if I am going to get it when I am older.April 24, 2008 at 2:56 pm #50790AnonymousInactiveI have two children. My dd is 4 and my ds is 5 months.
Child #1 dd no refluxChild #2 ds refluxMy dh and I are both on Prilosec. When I was pregnant with my ds I had horrible reflux, so bad it would make me gag. I took Protonix during my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy, I had some heartburn, but Tums would take care of the problem. My MIL takes Prevacid and my mom takes Protonix. My grandmother talks about how “fussy” my mom was and how she could never set her down. Definitely a genetic role.April 24, 2008 at 3:08 pm #50794AnonymousInactiveI can’t vote either as I only have 1 child. But according to my mom I had to be held non stop for the first month of my life until they put me on soy formula b/c of how fussy I was. Dh and I both have occasional heartburn and my mom is on nexium and my mil is on zantac. And on a side note my ped GI told me we had a 50% chance of having another with reflux (don’t know if that was b/c of the MSPI or not). So I strongly believe that there is a genetic link esp if the reflux is due to a food intolerance. Maybe not so much if it is b/c of a immature LES.
April 24, 2008 at 3:12 pm #50795AnonymousInactiveI’ve got 2 boys, and both have had reflux and protein intolerances.
My mom says that my older brother and I were dream babies, but my younger brother definitely had bad reflux and milk protein intolerance — although my poor mom could get no help from the doctor we went to at that time — just called “colic” back then, I guess. No history of “colic” on my hubby’s side of the family.Edited to add — I had zero heartburn problems with either pregnancy.Paula B2008-04-24 15:13:38
April 24, 2008 at 3:13 pm #50796AnonymousInactiveInteresting!
Both of my children had/have reflux, though my son’s (baby #2) was MUCH worse than his sister’s.We can’t figure out where it comes from in our family. According to my mom, I was the perfect, happiest baby she had (of 4!), and none of my siblings had problems either. My MIL swears that dh didn’t have problems either (but I kinda question her memory a bit! )Neither of us have heartburn or reflux now. I did when pregnant for a few months, but that was it!!April 24, 2008 at 4:17 pm #50803AnonymousInactiveMy mother probably had reflux as a baby. But I have the only refluxer that we know of in the family. My first child didn’t have it, that I knew of, but did spit up a lot (but also ate a lot).
April 24, 2008 at 4:55 pm #50808AnonymousInactiveThis is fascinating for me since I was just asking about it a couple of days ago. I only have Owen – so far – but I do know that my niece had pretty severe reflux and dairy intolerances that still bother her and she’s almost 5. My mom has always told me that she never had any problems with dairy until she was pregnant with me and then I was born and was “allergic” to dairy until I got to high school or so. I’m sure it was an intolerance but back then they called it an allergy. My mom is still lactose intolerant.
So for us, it definitely runs in the family.
April 24, 2008 at 8:31 pm #50814AnonymousInactiveBoth boys had it, but if I had Carter first, I think I might have thought he was just a “fussy baby” as he wasn’t nearly as bad of a spitter, or fussier, but I did get him on meds MUCH earlier and switched to Neocate at approx. 2 months, so he did get better much faster. Perhaps if I didn’t do these things he would have been worse? Not sure…. but definitely 2 for 2 here…..
April 24, 2008 at 9:26 pm #50822AnonymousInactiveFirst had nothing, second had MSPI, reflux. I’m questioning what would happen with a third. My MIL said she had to drink goats milk early on b/c of intolerances, DH doesn’t do well with milk but he still drinks it, my brother was on Nutramagin as a baby and my dad also avoids a lot of milk due to stomach issues, so it’s on both sides somewhat.
April 24, 2008 at 9:46 pm #50826AnonymousInactiveMy ds is MSPI and my MIL claims my dh was “allergic” to milk (I tried explaining the allergic vs. intolerance thing, but it was wayyy over her head). She says my dh was very fussy as a baby and the fussiness went away after she switched him to goats milk.
My mom is lactose intolerant, but can tolerate milk products as long as she has had her medication.April 24, 2008 at 11:05 pm #50832AnonymousInactive9 kids—–3 with reflux diagnosed by endoscopy—-#9, sylvia, (had a fundo), and my twins, #’s 4 & 5. #3 was extremely fussy until he was 2, spit up constantly, pretty sure it must have been reflux. #2 was treated for reflux for a period of time last year. # 7 tells me he occasionally gets food come back up into his mouth. i have severe reflux esophagitis, according to the pathology report. one of my older sisters has had surgery for a hiatal hernia. i think another sister is/has been on meds for reflux.
i just realized i voted wrong, i should have voted “more than 3”.kevieb2008-04-24 23:06:57
April 25, 2008 at 9:07 am #50839AnonymousInactiveI have 2 children – both had reflux. #2 was definitely worse. I have never had reflux problems but my hubby does.
