The boys have always been so fussy. They are considered colicky – and are on alimentum. They were then put on zantac for possible reflux. They would sometimes cry during a feeding (usually just when held, which was at night because they are twins), they would be very gassy, etc. Lately, tHey have been waking up all night long (up to 15 times). they take their paci and fall back to sleep. During the day, they sleep for about 20 minutes. Starting at 3 months, they have been putting their hands in their mouths constantly, sometimes screaming but sometimes not. The pedi GI is now trying them on prevacid. I hate giving them medicine not knowing if they need it. Prevacid is so harsh, but it turns out zantac causes sleeplessness. I have no clue if I should keep them on it. Help!

prevacid isn’t harsh…if it helps (I hope it’s a good dose) then you will see your boys sleep…

what formula are they on? are you breastfeeding? whatever it is it might be bothering them as well…

My dd couldn’t handle the alcohol in zantac. I agree with Laura…prevacid isn’t harsh. It helped my daughter. I hope you can find some help for your little ones. I can’t imagine dealing with two refluxers.

If you feel uncomfortable with giving them meds(I did) try the elimination diet first to see if that helps(If you are b/fing). If it does then you can stay on it, and if not then you can try the meds. You have to do what YOU feel is best for your babies and yourself.

Hi. I formula feed alimentum. No breastfeeding. Yesterday, we heard some wheezing and gurgling. They both spit up almost at the same time. They aren’t getting the prevacid. Lots of white beads stay in the bottle and nipple. We don’t think they are getting enough of their meds, so we can’t tell if it’s helping or not. I am so depressed. I cry so much now, and I don’t sleep.

please read through that- you shouldn’t have to be dealing with all the beads. ERG!! these doctors make me so so mad- that’s why I can’t leave this place even though my GERDling is now 3yrs old and has been reflux-free since he was 12months!

(and Julia, I have TONS of info about the elimination diet from my welcome/intro as well! I totally believe in trying everything! even the chiropractor- but that’s a whole ‘nother post- do a search & you’ll see)

anyway, once you get the proper dose (my educated guess is that the dose might not be high enough) and proper form of prevacid it can take up to 2 weeks to kick in…in the meantime, try the zantac- again, there’s a link from my welcome/intro with the zantac dosing- it’s important to check the dose, as zantac is very weight sensitive…

I understand your apprehension about medications for such little babies, but I can tell you that my life with Myles was H*ll until he was put on the right dose of Prevacid. I cried constantly and so did he. After 10 days things turned around and he was no longer miserable, screaming, and refusing to eat.

Don’t put the Prevacid in a bottle (we tried that too). Use a large medicine dropper, the kind that you can pull the squeezy end off of and dump the meds in, and put it in the side of their cheeks. If you want to mix it with a little formula you can do that as well. Then if any little beads stick to the dropper you can just suck up a little water, shake and squirt. You should be able to get most of the meds to them that way. At least until you see the doc again.

Gosh I’m in the same situation too with my 11 week old. He only cries like 1 or 2 times a day during feeding now and I’m giving him .08 dose of zantac. I’m scared to give him previcid because he maybe just colicky or it maybe his personality because he doesn’t complain all the time.

My little guy has been on prevacid (30 mgs) since he was 2 months old….it made a world of difference…he is such a happy little baby now… (very very strong willed and a bit demanding -lol but happy)

Zach was on the Prevacid since he was 8 weeks old and on day 11 we had
a completely different baby. We did start with the Zantac but
that didn’t do anything for him. We had to put the prevacid on a
spoon with just a drop of water so it would start to dissolve and then
give it to him. That way we knew he was getting all of the
meds. As for the sleep, it tooks some time to get him to sleep
well but he ate much better and wasn’t as cranky once the meds were
right. Good luck!
