Don’t know what is wrong!!

Hi… My daughter EMily seems to be uncomfortable when she eats. She will drink 2-3 oz and then refuse the rest. I have to sleep feed her the remaining amount. She had an endoscopy done on Friday and everything looked great. The doctor said he thought it was behavioral. I just don’t think that is it. She gets really squirmy and cries like something doesnt’ feel good. I just know that it hurts. What could it be? If her esophagus is not red and inflamed, it shouldn’t hurt right?? Maybe it is something else lower in the digestive tract. WE are still waiting on the biopsy results.Any ideas would be appreciated.

Emily is taking 6mg Prilosec 2x day and she is on Neocate

I truly believe that they can have pain without an inflamed esophagus. Or they could have had inflammation, and now just have discomfort. My daughter did the same thing. No one took us seriously, and she needed to be sleep fed through her whole first year (and still does). I’m not telling you this to scare you, but just because I don’t think it’s normal, or behavioural, for a baby to need to be sleep fed. They should be able to tolerate (and ENJOY) eating while awake. I would see if you can get her meds increased, her dose may be a bit low. How much does she weigh?

Emily weighs about 13lbs. The doc that did her endoscopy brushed me off as being too overprotective. I am sure that he sees worse cases than my daughters, but she is mine and i feel it is my responsibility to do whatever i can to make her happy and healthy. I am going to find a new gi specialist this week. I don’t know what feeding therapy is going to do…she wants to eat it just starts hurting. A feeding therapist isn”t going to fix that.

I think that’s the best thing you could do for her right now….find another and hopefully more sympathetic GI. She could be having enough reflux to cause discomfort during feeding, but not enough (thankfully) to damage the esophagus. Maybe a higher dose of Prilosec or a different PPI (like Prevacid or Zegerid) would help.

How many mg’s per ml is her Prilosec dose. How long has she been on Prilosec?

Have you tried Mylanta Cherry Supreme before feedings? Lots of mom’s here have used it and said it helps.

I hope you find a better GI. I doubt a three month old has a behavioral problem when it comes to eating. Something must be bothering her.
