InactiveHi I am a new mommy, with a three week old baby. The doctor has diagnosed her with reflux, and started her on prevacid. I am not convinced that she actually has reflux, so I thought I would ask here.
Here are her symptoms:
Lots of grunting, wheezing, and gasping during feeds.
Very active during feeds. Reaching, grabbing, stretching (sometimes arching back)
Restless after feeds, often gassy
Doesn’t like to be placed on back
Has vommitted a few times, has a little spit up
Is gaining weight very well
Generally content after burped for atleast 45 min.
What do you think? Thanks for your help!

Keymastersounds like silent reflux (not spitting up excessive amounts)
gaining weight does not mean a baby doesn’t have reflux…
wheezing during feeds? has a dr witnessed this? is dr going to do a swallow study to see if baby is aspirating during feeds? something you might want to ask dr…
prevacid isn’t harmful for babies, so after a good 2 weeks of administering it PROPERLY (
), if you dont’ see any difference then you can decide to perhaps not give hte prevacid- but you ‘need’ to give it a good full 2 weeks…May 27, 2007 at 4:31 pm #34623Anonymous
InactiveWhat do you mean by restless after feeds? Is she unhappy? Is there a dry cough? Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If breastfeeding do you possibly have over active let down?
Like Laure said prevacid is very safe and you could always try it for two weeks to see if it helps. It is supposed to be given on an empty stomach and 30 min before a feed. You can often give it while baby is sleeping.

InactiveHey
Your situation sounds kind of like mine. Kate is my daughter and was stumping docs all over Indiana(well, not ALL over but it took us three trys to find the right doc so it sure as heck FELT like all over) because she was gaining weight like a champ and appeared extremely healthy. Unfortunately, sometimes peds only start paying attention when the baby starts to lose weight and by then damage has been done.
ANYWAY, Kate’s a pretty happy baby most times but her feeding was our main red flag that something was up. I have OALD and she possibly has multiple food allergies(poor baby, I hope she turns out well adjusted after all this drama)but she would arch, scream sometimes, grunt, whimper, twitch, gasping, gulp air, always shows Sandifer sydrome symptoms(Stiffening of the leg. turning their head to one side, eyes rolling back, almost like seizure which is scary), and you could hear thr gurgling in her belly really loud of all this stuff moving up and down. What was my point again…..oh! I just thought this was normal because I would describe this behavior and the response I got was ” oh, some babies just fidget and are fussy when they eat” This of course was so much MORE than that I learned and wasn’t normal for an infant to eat this way.Kate’s situation is also strange because she LOVES playing on her back too so it was confusing.( I promise I’m almost done)It’s so awesome that you recognize something isn’t right. Always listen to your gut. I’m glad she’s on meds now and I hope she gets better soon. She will!

InactiveHello and welcome,
It does sound like silent reflux to me.
What form of Prevacid are you using? If it’s the Solutabs, capsules or packets, you have to make sure you give it on an empty stomach and then follow it up with a feeding 30 minutes later. (Many docs and pharmacists don’t tell you this).
It takes about two weeks to see improvement, so try to hang in there and ask for an increase in dosage if she doesn’t improve after two weeks. Babies should enjoy eating!
It’s very common for moms to mistake reflux pain for gassiness, colic, etc. Babies with reflux pain will be restless and uncomfortable after feedings, and they may grunt and groan both during and after feeds.
Like Laura said, if she’s wheezing I’d ask for a swallow study to make sure she’s not aspirating during feeds.
Good luck and glad you found us.

InactiveHi, Little Alana (OK she’s never been little
) started gaining weight like a champ from about four weeks and has since been at the 90 percentile. She was a comfort eater for weeks until we got her meds and formula figured out. She was never a big spitter, probably spitting less than a normal bub. But she had all the other symptoms you described and was only truely happy once we had her on prevacid.May 28, 2007 at 12:05 pm #34692Anonymous
