InactiveSince my son had reflux and formula issues, we started Erin on good start without dha/ara as soon as we got home from the hospital. At her 1 month checkup the pedi suggested we try the gentlese from enfamil – both are milk based formulas that have some broken down proteins. Erin started prevacid the following week when she was 5 weeks old. After nearly two weeks on the prevacid and not seeing results (by the way her only symptoms of possible reflux were extreme fussiness -all waking hours except when feeding- and wet burps – but since my son had reflux, the pedi and i thought we’d treat her for silent reflux), i gave Erin 3 bottles of soy. The first she did fine with, the second and third she vomited up the entire bottle. My son was a spitter but I have never seen anyone that small spit up so much fluid. She didn’t fuss when this happened and it wasn’t projectile. My husband and I decided that she must not be able to tolerate the soy – do you agree?
We are now trying a trial of nutramagin. She has no red ring but she does have a red pin-prick sized rash on her chest and stomach – nothing on her face.
Like I said earlier, she’s not a spitter – besides the soy bottles, she’s rarely spit up – that is until we tried the hypo formulas. Is that normal to all of a sudden spit up the hypo formula? She also is much fussier when eating the hypo formula and i’m not sure why. So far she’s only had it today but I don’t see any positive changes at all – i know it’s early but so far all she’s doing is fussing more when eating and now spitting up with every burp – seems worse in general to me.
I just have no idea what could be wrong with her!

Inactivethe hypo is thin, so a lot of babies spit it up easier. you may wanna
try adding some beechnut cereal (milk and soy free) to thicken it up.
also, the hypo tastes horrible so youre supposed to mix it in
gradually….August 18, 2006 at 9:29 pm #11615Anonymous
InactiveI bought a can of RTF and that is thicker than when you make formula from powder. She is fussing while eating, but she’s still eating – she’s had more ounces today than she’s ever had so it’s not like she’s refusing to eat the hypo formula.

Inactiveyeah she may have not like the taste at first, but she will get used to it..

InactiveSounds like MSPI issues if you ask me. But hey, what do I know???
Regardless, I wanted to tell you my son has serious intolerances and has never had the red ring. These signs we look for may be few and far between. He has about every other sign though. So, if your dd is missing some signs, it doesn’t mean it’s not MSPI.
From what I understand, Nutramagin needs at least a good weeks trial to see the difference. The soy may take some time to leave her system. That may be why she is sooo fussy still. Try to wait it out and give it a week. Also I thought I’d mention that some babies do better with the Alimentum as opposed to the Nutramagin. Keep that in mind. The RTF is made of different ingredients from the powder. That’s something to be aware of.
Does anyone in either family have a history of food intolerances or allergies? Corn? You are moving into the corn based formulas. Just something to think about.
If those don’t work, do you know the next step would be Neocate?
Just trying to give you things to look into. Sounds like you need help!
Hang in there. I’m here sleepless with you…

InactiveOne thing I forgot, if she has a big issue with the milk based formulas, the prevacid has slight traces of milk somethingorother in it.
The prevacid capsules don’t. I think you can have prevacid compounded. Is that right??? Other moms here will key in on this I’m sure.

InactiveI had formula issues when I was a baby (in 1974) – and ended up on some clear formula that wasn’t milk based (can’t remember the name of it). I was on whole milk by a year with no problems. No other problems on either side with allergies to food – just now dh and I are lactose intolerant to a degree but what adult isn’t?
Would you say the vomiting of the soy bottles = intolerance?
Was she ‘tolerant’ of the good start and gentlese b/c they are broken down – but they still made her fussy?
Last night was her best night of sleep (and she’s been a good sleeper). She ate at 11pm and woke at 6:30. Why would she sleep so good at night and cry all day long?
The solutabs to have lactose in them and yes I could have the prevacid compounded but it doesn’t last as long. I still don’t even know if she has reflux – could be MSPI all along and now i’m afraid to stop the prevacid – just in case.

InactiveWell, think like this, if you will… the MSPI can cause the reflux to happen as a result. The reflux does need addressed. If not it could do damage to her digestive system and noone wants to see that happen. So, meds are a must if you ask me.
I would say yes to the vomitting being intolerance. I would wonder if she slept that well. Good for all of you!!!! Maybe keep trying this and see what happens after a week? Maybe it’s still the other stuff just working out of her system?
How about using the capsules straight for her? sprinkle it into a little formula or something? More cost effective. I understand that for sure!

KeymasterI responded in another post-
it’s important to give each change 2wks…it’s all trial & error, unfortunately..for the nutrimigen, i’d slowly mix the old formula w/ it until you phase it out & you’re left w/ straight nutrimigen…
as for mspi- and for this formula info- there’re links from my welcome/intro that go into all of this in detail

InactiveJody, Alex is also fussy during the day but sleeps great at night.
The prevacid capsules are supposed to be given 30 minutes before eating, so sprinkling them in formula is probably not going to work.

InactiveWhen we go for her 2 month checkup (if not before), i’ll ask to see the same GI MD that my son saw.
I spoke with my mom earlier and she said I was on a banana tasting formula b/c I couldn’t tolerate milk or soy (vomited them both up). She agreed that I was able to go to whole milk at a year.

InactiveErin has been on the nutramigen now for 5 days and we have a different baby! It really is pretty amazing stuff. I just hope it stays this way and doesn’t get bad again.
Thanks for your help

InactiveThat is exciting to hear! I just bought Alimentum today at the store and I am going to start trying that with my little one! It’s encouraging to hear that it works! I can’t remember…did you gradually introduce it in the baby’s bottles or just start giving it outright? If you gradually did it, how long before you were giving 100% nutramigen?

InactiveI didn’t gradually switch although that is recommended due to the nasty taste. I had good reason to suspect intolerance and wanted the proteins out of her system asap. I hope it works for you.
