Dose Increase

Our ped prescribed 7.5 mg Prevacid last Friday. I kind of bugged him for an increase and he said I could do 15 mg/day as of yesterday, Tuesday. I probably am going to give her 7.5 in the am and 7.5 in the pm. I realize this is still a pretty low dose. Does anyone know if I will need to start counting 14 days from today or Friday? Why does Prevacid take so long to kick in? Is it possible to see results immediately but not get the full effect until 14 days??

christine/kevieb wrote a great explanation about how it’s not really ‘kciking in’ but, it’s that it takes time to heal the damage that’s there so it seems like it’s taking a while for the meds to work bcse you don’t see an immediate result- usually up to 14 days- I hope someone else chimes in…so I suppose it depends upon how bad the damage/irritation etc is before starting the PPI and maybe that’s why some see results sooner than others, but I haven’t ever heard of it taking longer than 2 weeks…

so, I do believe since the PPI is in your baby’s system then you will see an improvement as you increase the dose- maybe immediate, maybe not…

Like Laura said I too haven’t seen it take longer than two weeks except for one person I remember said it took closer to three weeks. I think it depends on the amount of damage that’s been done to the esophagus. When I took Prevacid during pregnancy it worked immediately but that’s probably because I started it immediately after the heartburn began, so there was no damage.

For Myles I always saw some initial improvement within a few days of a dosage increase but the big turnaround which brought lasting relief came on day 10 after his last increase. So, yes I do think it’s possible to see some relief sooner.

i was told it could take 2-3 weeks to see any results because the damage needs to heal first. the shutting of of the pumps should happen as soon as the meds get in the body’s system. i think that i saw the first signs of improvement on around day 12.

I would give it at least 10-14 days starting from today. I hope it helps! Good luck!

The first sign of improvement for us was in a few days….its so hard to remember now (that is such a nice thing and a relief to say). Hopefully your little one will start feeling better soon. Even though 15mg seems low compared to others there have been a couple of posters who have said their bubs only ever needed this much.
