InactiveHello! I just had my fourth baby- and if anyone recongnizes me on here, yes I had baby # 3 less than a year ago…
All three of my older kids have had reflux/food issues to some degree. This little guy seems to be no exception, sooooo we are already on alimentum and prevacid. The thing I am worried about is that he seems to have more of the “visible” reflux, whereas my others didn’t. I know so many of your LOs suffer this way. I didn’t realize how startling it was to watch them gag, choke and gasp after eating. After talking to the pedi, she recommended adding gripe water daily ( 1 ml 2x daily) after giving the prevacid ( 7.5 mg 1x daily ). She said it was a good way to see if he responded to it, before prescribing zegerid ( which she considered a “big gun” med ). She said it was basically the same thing. this seems off to me???So far I really havn’t noticed any big difference… He has been on the prevacid a week, and the alimentum just a few days, so I know it’s still early. But it almost seems like we are getting worse, with the choking/gagging more often. Also, she said he has laryngomalacia, which is a “floppy larynx, and can sometimes make reflux worse. Anyone familiar with this? He make a squeeky/chirpy noise whe he breaths and especially when he eats.June 11, 2010 at 7:28 am #66455hellbennt
KeymasterI remember you!!!
um, sorry but your dr doesn’t know what s/he is talking about…
zegerid IS a PPI. it’s prilosec PROPERLY compounded/made into another form so that babies can take it. it’s no ‘bigger’ than any other PPI. also, what form of prevacid are you giving? it sounds like a small dose? check out http://www.marci-kids.comas for gripe water:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3438and the ‘malacias’

InactiveI knew you would respond!! Thank goodness for you! You are a blessing to this site!
Yeah, I looked at the marci-kids dosing page earlier and was astounded. I remember w/ Cooper I had, ahem, secretly giving him the 15 mg solutabs and it worked GREAt and FAST. But my pedi refused to rx that amount. so i asked a dr friend to write rx and went from there…we are doing the solutab…the gripe water seems like it would make reflux worse! all the bubbles in it???so zegerid is a PPI, it isn’t any better/worse stronger/weaker than another PPI?i knew i should have gone to med school…tinaJune 11, 2010 at 4:15 pm #66457hellbennt
Keymastertina!
yep zegerid is prilosec in a form that can be given at any time- it doesn’t have to be timed around meals & solutabs are prevacid and they do need to be given on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30 minutes later
you can now buy prevacid OTC and get Bufferbabies and then you can give the prevacid at anytime, you don’t have to time around meals…
I *think* the concensus (sp) is that gripe water isn’t for our little refluxers
if you believe it’s ‘colic’ (or even if you don’t) you can also try probioticsread this article & page 2 tells you about probiotics:

InactiveTina, that’s ridiculous!!! What is your doc talking about?! Grip water isn’t good for refluxers, and anyway doesn’t treat reflux. Like Laura said, you can get so many meds OTC now, it’s so much better than before. Good luck.

Inactiveim pretty sure my eyebrows shot up during the conversation w/ the dr, but i guess i thought it was something id never tried, sooooo maybe i was out of the “gripe water loop”?????
we’ve done the solutab w/ all the kids….is the over the counter stuff now come in a dissolvable form?? that was the kicker a few years ago, and i never checked to see if that had changed…im all for getting faster results. cheaper too im guessing???thanks for the buffer babies info- ill be checking into that!!btw- this afternoon i gave him some mylanta after a few hours of screaming. out like light…gripe water…..grrr….June 12, 2010 at 1:37 pm #66462hellbennt
Keymastersolutabs are not OTC, but you can buy the OTC prevacid (capsules I think? or maybe tablets?) and use the bufferbabies to make your own compound that you don’t have to time around meals

InactiveJust wanted to chime in to agree w/ the other ladies. Your dr. is ridiculous (& I’m just being nice w/ my words).
Zegerid was the only thing my 3rd ds could tolerate + controlled his reflux. My 2nd ds was the same but we didn’t try Zegerid @ the time & just did w/o reflux meds until he could tolerate Prevacid (around 9 mths old).
My 2nd ds had laryngomalacia to some extent (never dx but realized it later) & we gave him gripe water for a while (when he was 2-3 wks old) & it DEFINITELY made his choking, gagging, labored breathing worse. I would stop that imo.
Hang in there!

Inactiveso i may have just figured out my dr’s train of thought w/ the grips water…
does zegerid have bicarbonate in it? i’m guessing she meant that giving the prevacid along with the gripe water ( bicarb ) would be alot LIKE zegerid??i dunno.Riley ( I just realized I never introduced the little guy! ) is somewhat better, at the almost 2 week mark of prevacid/ alimentum. Getting impatient! Should I call and have the dr up the dose to 15mg ( if she even will! ) or hang in there a few more days or go ahead and try the zegerid/bufferbabies?I hate this part!!!

Keymastersince you think the prevacid is helping, I think I’d stick w/ it. I’d either somehow increase the solutab (if the timing is going ok w/ you guys) on your own (I suppose I’m obligated to tell you to check w/ your dr first
) or just go ahead and get the prevacid OTC and the bufferbabies so that you can increase to what you like (& decrease too!) and so that you can give at any time w/o timing around mealsJune 14, 2010 at 7:20 pm #66476Anonymous
Inactivemy dh and i were just saying that we would have to keep filling kaylee’s old prevacid and riley’s just to keep the dose up if needed. cha-ching!!
i will try and price the buffer babies+ OTC prevacid and go from there.i just gave him some mylanta and finally settled down again. clearly we need a bit of a boost…June 14, 2010 at 9:13 pm #66478hellbennt
Keymasterdrs seem to give out zantac fairly easily, so for that extra boost, until you get OTC prevacid & bufferbabies (or whatever it is that you decide), ask for some zantac- read here on how to TELL your dr you need the highest dose for weight- tell dr it’s for the ‘breakthrough’ acid & make sure to
give zantac seperated 4hrs from the prevacid. but, it CAN be given w/ the mylanta. mylanta (& zantac) needs to be seperated from the PPI
