InactiveSo today was my first day back to work full time and I was a wreck having to leave Cade. Being my second child, I mistakenly thought it’d be easier this time. It was horrible. All day I dreamed of coming home and breastfeeding, cuddling and making him smile. We got home and he immediately started SCREAMING. Bloody murder. I could not get him to stop! The sitter said he hadn’t slept much, which is odd for him (since his meds. kicked in!), so I at first thought he was overtired, but he still wouldn’t sleep after getting home. Long story short, we ended up at urgent care. I figured they’d call me nuts and send us home, but would rather have them do that then end up in the ER at midnight. Good thing I went, he had a double ear infection.
My question – I’ve been reading a lot on this forum of your kids having ear infections. My 3-year old (didn’t have reflux) has never had one. Are reflux kids more prone? If so, why?
Thanks. I think we caught it early, thank goodness. How fast do they get over them?

InactivePS – my subject line is dumb, now that I think of it. No ear infection is “normal”. I meant are they more prone
Also, is there anything I can do to try to prevent future infections? I have no idea what that would be…but thought I’d ask anyway.July 10, 2007 at 8:57 am #38930Anonymous
InactiveI have no experience with ear infections b/c my daughter has been lucky so far not having had one yet. I’m crossing my fingers and toes!!! I’m not sure if refluxers are prone to them but I know someone more experienced will chime in. I just wanted to tell you that I hope Cade feels better and these ear infections heal FAST!!! Having sick refluxing babes is sooooooo hard!! Sorry I don’t have any stellar advice but my thoughts are with you!!!!

InactiveYes, they are common and related but I have no clue why! Sarah pretty much had one constant infection from 4 months old until her tube surgery at 13 months. It seemed we’d get off an antibiotic and within a few weeks we were back to square one. It was pretty miserable! At least after awhile I could read her cues and knew that it was time to go back to the doctor!
I am not telling you to jump the gun or anything, but my pediatrician was NOT proactive when it came to referring us to an ENT. I think we could have saved a lot of misery if she would have referred us sooner! If Cade continues to have ear infections (probably 4 or more) I’d ask to be referred to an ENT. It was the best thing we ever did!!
I’m so sorry he’s going through this…especially with you being back at work!
Hope he feels better soon!July 10, 2007 at 9:13 am #38934hellbennt
Keymasteryes, actually, reflux babies tend to be more prone to ear infections…babies in general are prone bcse their tubes (ear tubes, can’t remember the correct name
) are horizontal and liquid tends to gather/pool there and, when they’re horizontal, it’s hard to drain. as babies get bigger their tubes naturally start to become vertical, thus draining is easier… now, as for why reflux babies are more prone: baby’s ears, nose & throats are very close to one another. when they reflux it can get all up into the upper respiratory system.click on the last link on the page, where it says, “To see an animation of how gastric reflux gets into the ears, nose and throat, click here.” http://www.marci-kids.com/whatisgerd.htmlto prevent future ear infections & to help clear current ones:saline saline salinebuy the generic squirt bottle (no need for Little Noses- compare ingredients & you’ll see)squirt up each nostril at every diaper changeno suctionjust let gravity do it’s thingalso: when baby is prescribed antibiotics, it’s a good thing to give them probiotics when the antibiotic is finished- there are many brands for infants- some have milk & soy, so look out for this if it’s an issue for your baby- my babies don’t have mspi so we use baby’s jarrodopholus (sp?) found at whole foods in the refrigerated section, by the flax seed oilhellbennt2008-10-25 12:04:31

InactiveHi there,
ear infections are common with refluxers. kendra had 3 in a row and thanks goodnes she han’st have one in a while, however she has fluids in her ear that will not drain all the way. the ped said just keep and eye on her and if she gets really fuzzy, she might have an infection. any ways. i hope your little one gets over that soon. A good hypoallergenic probiotic i have found is one make by kirman labs. good luckJuly 11, 2007 at 8:20 pm #39032Anonymous
InactiveOh man, I feel your pain. Ben has had 4 ear infections in the last few months and they are horrible!!! My daughter only had one, so I was not prepared for this.
Anyway, all of Laura’s suggestions are good ones.
From my experience, I usually see a result from the antibiotic in about 4-5 days. Things tend to get much better from there on out. I would give him tylenol or motrin pretty regularly until that time though, as I’m sure he is in a lot of pain. Warm compresses on the ears can help (if he’ll put up with it), and there are also homeopathic ear drops that can help with the pain too.
As far as preventing them.. other than the saline, I have no clue! Let me know if you figure it out!!
