InactiveWe went to the pediatrician the other day for Ben’s 1 yr. appt., and in the info. they gave us, there was this about peanut butter and eggs. I know that this is a recent change as I don’t remember this being the rule when Claire was younger. Just wondered what you all thought about it. I will quote directly from the sheet I was given.
“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends delaying eggs until 2 years of age, and peanut butter and shell fish until 3 years of age. This recommendation, however, is not based on any scientific data! European academies believe that it is safe for a child to eat any foods after 12 months of age. Our local allergists say: If a parent has as a significant food allergy, follow the AAP recommendations. If there are no food allergies in the family, delay eggs until 18 months of age and peanuts until 2 years of age. If a sibling has a peanut allergy, delay shell fish and tree nuts until age 3 and peanuts until age 5.”September 20, 2007 at 8:13 pm #43000Anonymous
InactiveThat’s interesting! I was more familiar with the AAP information and was surprised at Sarah’s 15 month check up that the ped. said peanut butter was OK. He said to always give it with something really sweet (like jelly or marshmallow puff) to promote salivation and lessen the choking risk. I’m still not sure what to make of it!

InactiveYou know I hadn’t heard that one about eggs (I was always told one year for eggs), but I had always been told to wait until age 3 for any peanut butter & shellfish. Everyone thought I was paranoid or something! I didn’t give Isaac any peanut butter, nuts, soy, or shellfish until he was three, but by the time Parker was 2 we had hear different and that age 2 was okay unless allergies run in the family. Who knows! I hear something different every time.

InactiveI know you can’t give egg whites until after 1 yr. and I did hear about peanuts and shellfish if their is a family hx. Cooper’s cousin has a severe peanut allergy so no peanut butter for him until 3 which is a bummer as that is my favorite sandwich!

InactiveI waited on the peanut butter with Claire until after 2, but it was really hard!!! There’s only so much you can give at lunch, you know? I’m sure she had peanuts in other foods that we didn’t realize about though. But eggs is going to be tough to wait on.
I wonder if it applies to foods with eggs in them like baked goods, pasta, etc.September 20, 2007 at 10:48 pm #43019Anonymous

Keymasterwe do/did peanut butter at 12 months- not tons! but jonah got into some at the park (scavenger
was eating crumbs off a blanket and the older child leaving the crumbs had been eating ritz & peanut butter) at about 12 months & was fine & now Ari has had some (dh gave him some w/o realizing he shouldn’t
) so everyone is ok…but I’m not giving peanut butter ‘on purpose’ to ari until he’s 2…September 23, 2007 at 1:39 pm #43131Anonymous
InactiveI’d heard about the pnut butter at age 3 if there’s a history of food allergies, but not eggs. I always heard eggs at age 1, and actually gave Dagney her first egg this morning and she seemed to like it.
That’s one thing I have to say I don’t like about my pedi, they give little to know info on feeding. We didn’t get anything at this visit pertaining to feeding, and at the 6 & 9 month got very little info.September 23, 2007 at 2:31 pm #43139Anonymous
InactiveI was totally planning on adding in egg soon too! Well, if it makes you feel better, Denise, Ben has had food with egg in it already. Not egg itself, but some pasta and I think some cookie/cracker type thing. We don’t have food allergies in our family either, so I’ll probably cave and give him egg soon. I’m really going to try to hold out on the peanut butter though.. at least until 2. I need to try the almond or sun butter.
