InactiveIn am back for a little advice. I hope you and your little ones are doing well.
Sydney has been breaking out in severe hives for the last 2.5 months. She has a breakout every week and half for 4-6 days. Otherwise she is healthy and happy.
After speaking with a dermotologist and confirming it is hives, we agreed to try an elimination diet. She had never done this with someone so young before and wasn’t sure how to go about it. We are going to consult our ped as well as a nutritionist. I have been keeping a food diary, but have not seen a pattern. Has anyone done this with a one year old? Do you have any advice on ensuring she gets the proper nutrients and calcium? I was thinking rice milk, but am not sure that will be sufficient. Any advice is appreciated! TIA

Keymasterthere’s links from the (‘my’) mspi main page (linked to from my welcome/intro)
maybe look at the link as to how to reintroduce foods? so maybe you’d cut out dairy for 3 weeks, then soy, etc…
I truly don’t know, but reading about eliminating foods should help
was she mspi? on neocate? what formula worked?

InactiveShortly after my son turned one, we started eliminating things from his diet. The dairy was first. He was on milk by then and getting worse by the day. I simply stopped giving him milk. I didn’t give him anything to replace it. He drank water with a splash of white grape juice to flavor it. As a supplement, we put liquid calcuim and liquid vitamins in his drink. Just until I knew it made a difference.
I tried soy milk after about 2 or 3 weeks. Two cups full and the soy milk was out for us. He reacted to it horribly. So, out with all soy in his diet.
After about 3 more weeks, for us, it was on to gluten. This was the toughest. Low and behold, we were getting results. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it does work.
Some children are put on Neocate alone for a couple months— that’s MONTHS— to clear their system of all allergens. It takes a long time for their little systems to clear out. Then reintroduced foods slowly. That’s another option. Some kids are sooo allergic to things that they live on Neocate alone up to the age of 8 years old!!! Can you imagine? At least it’s not that extreme for her. But it says a lot for the nutritional value of Neocate.

InactiveHives were the major sign of Kaelyn’s allergies. The biggest challenge that we had in determining which foods were causing problems was that sometimes she would react in a matter of minutes or hours and other times it would take a couple of days for a reaction to appear. So, it was really hard to pinpoint the problem. Another challenge iwas that the more severe her allergy, the bigger reaction. Her allergy to apples is fairly minor, so I never made the connection between her eczema and apples. Have they considered doing allergy testing? Kaelyn was about 16 months old when we did hers. Once we cut out wheat and milk products, most of her hives and eczema disappeared. We went back for skin testing and discovered the allergies to apples and peaches. We cut those out and she was fine in just a couple of days. If you don’t want to do testing, I think Laura’s idea of reintroducing foods is the best way to go. It will be frustrating, but probably the most effective way to do it.

InactiveThanks for the responses. Sydney started developing eczema and hives around 7.5 months old. She has been on milk based formula since three weeks old and we never had any issues with it. The hives have increased dramatically since she turned 9 months old.
The dermotologist is going to due blood tests next month, but wants us to try the diet as well. She has never reacted immediately to any foods, it could be hours or days later. My ped just called this evening and suggested rice milk and liquid vitamins during the trial. They said to eliminate the top 7 allergens for two weeks and then reintroduce them one a week. Does that sound sufficient?

My son is 20 months now, but we have been going threw this since he was 4months.They said he had reflux did UGI showed reflux, he was put on alimentium formula and regland, zantac and pariactin (not forsure on spelli ng) Now found out he is allergic to milk/soy proteins. He was placed on Elecare vanilla. He does nothing but cry all day if he gets anything with soy or dairy. Hard to find things for 20 month old to eat with out those things. I know how hard this is i feel for you. We are going to do the gluten thing to do you have any sug for that?

InactiveI think that the major allergens is a really good way to start. It will certainly help you narrow things down. If doing that doesn’t work, then you can start looking at other foods.

InactiveThanks Hellbennt,
That information was really helpful, I am still at my ends because ayden will not eat it has been a week now and i can get him to eat two or three bits and he is done. He got a little bit of dairy and soy last week and has been crying and fussy, diarrea and now he won’t eat has anyone else experienced this. I need some help. I can’t even get him to drink his elecare now. I did not realize he was that sensitive to milk and soy till now. When he was a baby everyone told me i was crazy basically.
