InactiveHello,
I went to my DS’s pedi today and she was no help at all. Basically she gave me a rx for erythromicin to help empty his stomach faster. He is not loosing weight and is in fact nursing well (he nurses all the time because it soothes his throat I assume) but did not feel comfy rx prevacid since it is not approved for infants under 1 yr. I printed out info from Marci-Kids and am going to fax it to her and see if she will rx for prevacid. I have to wait 4-6 weeks to even get an appt with the GI doctor and I can’t wait that long. I will loose my mind. When I told her about the side effects of the erythromicin (severe stomach cramps) she said it shouldn’t do that in an infant but I don’t want to take the chance. Anthony is a Happy spitter so I am not concerned with the spit-ups, I am concerned with the constant screaming and fussing-which leads me to my next question….is this more colic than reflux?Or a little of both. In the meantime should i continue the zantac. Also should I mix the zantac with the 1 mL of cherry supreme mylanta, or dose them two hours apart?Sorry so Long I am venting.
Also has anyone tried probiotics in helping with colic?tamarag 2008-01-14 19:19:57 January 14, 2008 at 7:43 pm #47345hellbennt
Keymasterok there aren’t many drugs that are ok for infants under 1 years old I mean who would allow the testing?
anyway maybe try a family doctor, many have had success this wayalso yes you can try probiotics- page 2 of this (fabulous) article tells which ones http://wondertime.go.com/learning/article/interview-colic-expert.htmlI would continue with the zantac at 10mgs per kilo until you get the prevacid…and yes you can mix zantac right w/ the mylanta to help it go down betterwhat are baby;s stools like?January 14, 2008 at 8:24 pm #47349Anonymous

InactiveI’ve said this many times before, but colic is not a disease it’s just a term to describe behavior. So, the behavior is fussy baby. If your baby has reflux and is in pain than he will be fussy. There is a book out now called colic solved. It is written by a dr. and he says basically what I said that colicy behavior is caused by pain of some sort. Usually an allergy or acid reflux. Also as Laura said most things are not approved for infants, but many drs. will still prescribe them. You may have to do some research on it and go back to the dr. There is some great info on Marci-kids at the safety of ppi drugs. I wish I knew where it was located. Maybe I can find it and post it here. Anyway, good luck.

InactiveScroll to the bottom of this link and it talks about motility drugs.
Oh, interesting, here in this link at the top it states which ppi’s are now fda approved for infants http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.htmlYou said you are going to fax the marci-kids info to your dr, in that info there is an area that talks about how much is too much, maybe highlight that info for her. That was what I was talking about in my above post. The safety of ppis.If you have to take the info in person and hand it to her. Even maybe go on a bad day. I know that’s hard sometimes, but the dr really needs to see how bad it is. I think most peds just don’t get it. I think they are getting there, but sadly they need us to educate them. Don’t let your dr. make you feel like you don’t know what your talking about. Your a very smart lady and an awesome mom. Keep up the good work and please keep us posted.January 15, 2008 at 11:26 am #47368Anonymous
InactiveTAMARAQ
The erythro helped Ashlynn with her wet hiccups and decreased her spit-ups greatly. Ash had a ear infection and had to take a different anitbotic for that , so at that time I quit giving her the erythro. Again it did helps with her frequent wet hiccups.January 15, 2008 at 1:20 pm #47376hellbennt
Keymaster‘stringy’ in a stool can be mucous…

InactiveI worry about him taking antibiotics for an extended time. I am also worried about thrush in both of us. Also diarhea. Marci-kids doesn’t really recommend it either. I am sooooo confused.

Keymasteryou’re the mama. if there has ben no test to verify DEGE (delayed gastric emptying) & you’re not comfortable giving the medicine, then don’t.
my baby was prescribed reglan (also for DGE) & after researching I took him off of it.I would concentrate on getting a PPI or even some zantac in the meantime.that’s me & my opinion. please don’t tke my word for it- research as you’re doing
. it’s hard & you’re doing it!January 15, 2008 at 9:57 pm #47400Anonymous
InactiveHe is taking 1.6 ml of zantac BID with 1 ml of mylanta to help with the taste. Also though, his spit up lately is really mucousy? What do oyu think that means?

Keymastermy guess is milk and/soy intolerance? or something you’re eating if you’re breastfeeding or the formula, etc
but that’s a guess…can you put info in your signature- go to the top of the page to ‘settings’ then to ‘profile’ just so I can keep track
– like if you’re on the TED or waht formula, baby’s meds & doses – what’s zantac total for the day- BID gets me confused

InactiveI’m confused.. you say he is a happy spitter, but then you say he is fussy and colicky…????
Also, many babies on this board are on probiotics.. Ben has been on one for several months now. Certainly can’t hurt, especially if you are going ot use the erythro.January 17, 2008 at 9:23 am #47436Anonymous
InactiveHi, I just ordered some probiotics. I have decided to not try the erythro way. I think that there are other methods….Sounds confusing I know, He is a happy spitter….when he spits up he doesn’t act like he is hurting….I also think that he swallows it alot as well. He does this “bubble gum chewing” thing where it comes up and the he makes this chewing movement with his mouth and then swallows it. BUT he is fussy during feeding and after (arching, wiggling, whining and crying, pulling off and on) He sometimes belches and cries when he does it because it hurts (I assume).
His spit up is usually curdled and thick and mucousy (sorry TMI) which makes me think dairy problem since I am EBFing.I am going to ask my pedi for the zegrid, I printed out info from Amrci Kids since I cant get an appt with Pedi Gi doc for weeks and the zantac does nothing…..since his spit up isn’t really projectile….does that mean anything?i am so confused
