Finally on Prevacid…what dose?

Ok…so the GI put Julia on prevacid, and he said to give her 7.5 1-2 x’s a day, as I find needed…..she’s on the solutabs, and I just started….my question is this, I did go to marci kids, and they do recommend the full 15 per day, given 2 x’s per day (julia is 14 lbs, and almost 7 mos old)……..

The GI said he think’s one 7.5 dose in the morning should be enough….so should I try that for a while, and then, if it doesn’t work, go up for 15 per day…(meaning 7.5 in am, and in the pm)….or should I start with 15 per day, and wean down to 7.5….Just wondering everyone’s opinions!! Thanks 🙂

this is what marci-kids recommends for her weight and age:

“Your child, who is 7 months old and weighs 6.4 kg, should receive a dose of 6 to 9 mg of Prevacid delivered 3 times per day for a total of 18 to 27 mg per day. “.

i doubt 7.5 mg will do anything, and there is a good chance that 15 mg wont help her much either.

my son didnt get any reflief until he got on the marci-kids.com dose. i would try to fax all of the dosing info and research to your doctor.

I would go do the dose Natalie recommends. If you wait the damage could be so bad that will take a while to heal and then when you do the higher dose you may think it’s not working. Once things are good on the high dose you can then wean down little by little. Also, keep a journal. Babies all have fussy days and it can be very confusing.

Natalie, how long before she could tell if the lower dose is not working? I can’t remember. I think for Justice it took 5 days and then I knew it needed to be increased again.

I’d start with 7.5 mgs twice per day, and if you don’t see a big change in two weeks I’d work on getting it raised to marci-kids standards. Make sure you give it on an empty stomach and follow it up with a feeding 30 minutes later. This is very important to get the full effect, but most docs and pharmacists don’t tell us.

start w/ 7.5 two times a day

read in ‘Prevacid 101’ about how & when to administer them (link is found in ‘groupie intro’ & it’s also posted in the stickied post called ‘treating GERD w/ PPIs’ found in the medicine forum- from that post scroll down to the purple post)

after 2 weeks if it’s not good, prepare yourself & FAX your dr keeping it short & full of facts (no feelings) and just state your request for higher dose

Why would you wait? Why not just start with the higher dose and wean down to what works? To me it seems like that would make more of an impact on the dr than just waiting it out. Then the doc could see it is actually working and at what dose. It is proof that a higher dose does work. It has been my experience that if you wait on the dr you have to wait forever for things to get better. Just curious. No bad tone here. I want to help other moms and she has a really good question that if I’m wrong I want to know why so I can be right next time. My friend did do the highest marci kids dose and then weaned down and it worked for her. It also helped her dr to see that the baby did in fact need the higher dose. I did a lower dose that my doc recommended and it didin’t work so I did what Dr. Phillips told me to do and things got better. That is just my experience though. You ladies may have other experiences. I’m here to learn.

I am saying to start at the higher dose, at 15mgs per day. I thought from her post, the dr suggested trying 7.5 and then moving up to 15mgs a day, but, at second glance, the dr only said 7.5mgs & never mentioned going higher…so I do say to start at 15 & go from there…then fax the doctor to ask for an even higher dose if it’s necessary…sorry for the confusion

Hi there, I would start with the highest dose you can, like the others suggested… sounds like 7.5mg twice a day. If you want to go higher, then I’d do like Laura suggested and fax your ped some info, and see if he’ll go higher. Make sure to give it like the others suggested (empty stomach/followed up with a meal 30 minutes later). Good luck.

I think Shelby was suggesting going straight to the highest marci kids dose 6-9mg 3 x a day versus the Drs 7.5mg 1-2 x a day. Is that right? I think its a really good question Shelby. We only have our own experiences to give…so don’t feel you have to modify yours if other have different experiences anyway. I know it helped me when I initially posted to get lots of ideas and do the ones that fit me and my personality style better (iykwim).

I’m not sure really about the rights or wrongs so to speak…personally I would probably go with the marci kids dose (which i did) but i think it really depends on how you feel about that personally, in your own mind…iynwim. I’m a bit of a rebel by nature (not so good on occasion as I have discovered).

But if the Dr said 1-2 times (and you feel more comfortable going with this) I would take it at two times (thats nearly the lowest dose in the range of marci kids anyway—18mgs). See how it goes over two weeks then request the increase if not working.

Abby does great on the 15mg dose. She has been on this dose since she was about 8wks. Not all babies need the high dose of Prevacid that Marci-Kids recommends. And all the GI’s and pedi’s that I have talked with won’t prescribe that high of a dose even with the info that Marci-kids has on their website. Hopefully the 15mg will do the trick!
