InactiveNo we’re not pregnant….but I’m thinking about it
and wondering if I’ve completely lost my mind. So, please let me know if I have or if you’ve found it. hahaI’m curious if any of you have done research about what to do the second time around after you’ve had the MSPI child or the kid who can’t have gluten or the child with severe reflux. Are there reputable articles out there dealing with what to do or what not to do or what might have an effect on these things?? I’d like to do as much as I can to avoid going through ANY of Lucas’ issues with another baby/child. i’m guessing most of this is the luck of the draw and genetics, but I was curious. I haven’t even looked because I always consult the experts first before trying to reinvent the wheel myself.

InactiveFrom what I understand it is hereditary and there is a 50% chance of having another reflux baby once you already have one. That is what our Ped GI told us when we first saw him. So I think it is like you said the luck of the draw.

KeymasterClaire, since Kate isn’t mspi then I wouldn’t worry as much as I would if she were…
I am no scientist, nor have I read anything scientific about this, so to all reading this, take it as my opinion and not based on any facts, lol:
It is my feeling that maybe it’s those w/ mspi or food related reflux that is ‘more’ hereditary and that an immature LES is just luck of the draw?
I’ve read that ‘caucasian’ boys (I hate ethnic terms like this!!!) are more likely to have reflux, but after 4 years on this board I can tell you that’s just NOT TRUE…Now Anne
: I would think that at least during the last month of pregnancy, if you were to restrict your diet, then your breastmilk would be like an elemental formula, free of potentially ‘offending’ proteins…I don’t know about restricting your diet before that, though…I will email the mama who allowed me to post the excellent article/post about the misconceptions of elemental formulas, bcse she seem to know her stuff, LOL!!! She takes a bit to get back to me, but I’ll post what she says
Ah, a baby!!! I LOVE babies, LOL! And to think of all the slings you can wear, ROTFLMAO

Keymasterwow! Traci got back to me in record time!
this is her response:We just had this discussion on ACED[http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ACED/ – Our discussions include topics like symptoms (feeding problems, reflux, allergies, failure to thrive, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), how to get a proper diagnosis, where to find treatment, feeding tubes, going formula only and many, many other issues relating to Eos Disorders. Please join us at our new location and share your advice and struggles.]and I am sorry to say that there is nothing concrete in the medical community or elsewhere that can conclusively answer these questions. Researchers are still trying to determine the causes for MSPI, Eosinophilic Disorders, the sudden rise in children with allergies, etc. There will not be any definitive discussion about how to prevent these things until they can figure out why they are happening. For now there is much speculation. The going thing at this time is for the mother to be to avoid the top 8 allergens during pregnancy. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no proof that this changes anything. For now, it is up to the individual. You can find articles that suggest this or that might help, but the proof doesn’t exist. Personally, I think pregnancy has enough challenges without adding things that may or may not make a difference. The best thing you can do for your unborn child is eat healthy and stay mentally healthy. Everything else at this point is out of our control.HTH.Traci(Just an experienced parent)August 4, 2007 at 9:22 pm #40497Anonymous
InactiveHi Anne,
I’m definitely not an expert but wanted to tell you my experience. My older son was milk protein intolerant and also had an immature LES, which he outgrew at about a year old. When I was pregnant with him, I ate a lot of dairy foods so I was thinking that maybe overexposure caused it.
Anyway, when I got pregnant with my second son, I kept this in mind and ate only a little dairy in moderation — with no luck. Nathan definitely has milk protein intolerance, and more….I’m still on the TED adding things back in slowly but so far I know he also has problems with tomatoes and most likely soy. I think he has an immature LES, too, because even on the strict TED I could hear and see his reflux coming up all the time, and he still couldn’t sleep, was very fussy, etc.I agree with the previous posts — maybe try eliminating or moderating problem foods in pregnancy but don’t worry too much about it. Believe me — I would have done ANYTHING the second time around to avoid what we went through the first time, but sometimes I think you just get what you get 🙂 One thing though — I did cut out dairy foods completely a week before Nathan was born, and I know that helped somewhat.Good luck!!August 6, 2007 at 11:43 pm #40613Anonymous
InactiveI agree with all posts above and would just say again that maybe cutting out dairy the last month or two weeks if you are going to breastfeed and know about when baby is going to be born. I hope things are different, but just expect the worst and hopefully things will be picture perfect. I have had two boys with it and just expect that every baby we have weather adopted or biological will have gerd. Hopefully that won’t be the case, but at least I am prepared.
Hope that doesn’t sound negative. I am so not trying to be negative. I know for me it would’ve been better just expecting Justice to have it. I thought it could never happen again though.Justice’smom2007-08-06 23:45:27

InactiveI really don’t think there is much you can do about it….OK I haven’t really done any research on it…except I did read that taking probiotics can help…but niether my husband nor I have any type of intolerances. My mom nursed me and ate what she wanted and I was great and my hubby’s mom had him on regular formula and she always talks about what a happy baby he was, so I don’t know where Brianna got it from. She did outgrow it by about 10 months so maybe those less severe cases just have to do with developing the digestive system…who knows, but I am just praying about it this pregnancy, but not worring about it. Thanks to this site I feel so much more prepared.

InactiveI remember reading in a post by Heidi T. about avoidance of allergenic foods during pregnancy, and she had a link or two with information about that. Here is her original post. She might be able to give you some more information.
I’ve been thinking about this myself, as I have had 2 kids with MSPI/MFPI, and I’ve always wanted a third but I don’t know if I could do this one more time! It would be nice if there were something we could do to lessen the likelyhood, but I don’t know. I think genetics play a big part.August 9, 2007 at 12:30 am #40733Anonymous
InactiveThanks, ladies. It helps to hear some of your thoughts. I’ve been thinking all along that I would have to prepare for the worst and be ready to do what I did the first time around all over again….and this thinking always leads me to think about having an only child!!! HAHAHAHA. I guess if this all happened again I would know immediately what was up and would already know the docs to use locally, etc. etc. I HAVE tried to feel better thinking that the hiatal hernia is very rare in infants so that might actually put us in a statistically lower bracket for that happening again, rather than the immature LES? who knows.
Laura, thanks for your thoughts and I know, I’m dying for new slings!!! Thanks all of you for your kind thoughts. I’ll let everyone know if I really lose it and go for this a second time.
I’m realizing I’m just really terrified still, even reading your posts it reminds me of how it was and it’s very scary for me to mentally put myself back where I was two years ago this time. So….I’ll keep thinking about this and enjoying my sleep and my unrestricted diet for now!!! August 9, 2007 at 1:03 am #40735Anonymous
InactiveSheri,
I just looked through your link to Heidi’s info….wow! Thanks so much! I could have used her info two years ago….hahahaha. I will definitely check it out in reference to any possible “project” we might have coming up.
