Gaviscon, carafate

Was wondering about these two drugs, can someone tell me what kind of experience they have had with either. And can you take these if you are taking prevacid solu?? I’m also confused on where or how to get carafate? Does this need to be prescribed? I had read that Gaviscon can help with bowl movements, how?? I think my son has DGE? What are the symptoms of DGE? Sorry for all the Q’s but would love to get some answers

I don’t know anything about Gaviscon, but we did use Carafate with my dd. It didn’t do a thing for her unfortunately It’s nasty stuff, I tried it. She would always make the yuckiest face when I gave it to her and I felt so bad. If she had to suffer through it I figured I might as well try it! Anway, I’m rambling. Carafate was prescribed by our doc, I don’t think it’s OTC but I’m new at this too. Her prescription was I think(it’s been awhile so don’t quote me)2mls 4xday…..does that sound right……..it was a lot I remember b/c it was a bear trying to get her to down it. I’m pretty sure you can use it while on the solutabs, we were at the time. Sorry if this doesn’t help much but I’ll let the other mamas chime in too with more info. I know Carafate has worked well for a lot of kiddos on this site but bummer for us it didn’t do a thing. Good luck!

there is a specific test for DGE that baby can have done- it is called a stomach emptying scan & perhaps there is another name for it, too…

carafate is a short term solution that did help jonah during his worst reflux; it’s a prescription and can be taken with other medications- just needs to be administered a certain amount of time away from ohter meds

to do a search: there’s the ‘search’ button located in the upper right hand corner of the screen

you put the key word/s you’re searching for

then you choose “Topic Subject” from the drop- down menu of “Search In”

then I like to choose “All Forums” from the drop- down menu of “Search Forum”

then I like to choose “Topic Start Date” from the drop- down menu of “Sort Results By” (this way I get all the posts from the past that might help me)

Myles also had DGE. His symptoms were: a very small apetite (he lived on 15-18 ounces a day), throwing up hours after eating, and constipation.

Sorry I don’t know much about Carafate or Gaviscon. There have been discussions about Gaviscon on this board not too long ago. Maybe do a search…

Hmmm, well Charlie is still young (4 mo’s) so maybe his sytem just needs more time to work out the kinks.

Does anyone know of some natural remedies for DGE? I would like to avoid using an more meds than neccesary 🙂

Dagney has Carafate, which we’ve used here and there when she was having flare-ups, and it did seem to work for her (she had 30 min naps, but when she’d take the carafate, it would go to at least 1 hr!). It is by prescription and can be taken with solutabs, but must be given at least 90 mins apart from the Prevacid. Her rx is for 2ml 3x/day. I never used Gaviscon either, but we did use a lot of Myanta in our time, although I’ve heard othes say Gaviscon is a better choice. Good luck!

I haven’t heard of any natural remedies for DGE, but if constipation is a problem there are a number or natural rememdies that worked well for Myles. Pear juice, prunes, benefiber…..
