This site has been so useful for all of my gerdlings. I used it with my son, who is now 5.5 and my daughter, who is 4 today. How times have changes with the medicines!!
My newest child, a son, was born December 7th. Par for the course, he has reflux as well. Silent reflux, just like the rest of my children (DS #1’s reflux substantially improved after PT for his torticollis).
We tried Zantac and with it being given 3x/day, it helped for maybe 1-2 weeks. Then it stopped working. I also had Prevacid Solutabs left over from 4 years ago that I used with my daughter and so I gave him one per day, along with the Zantac. I know the solutabs are 3.5 years old but it was the best I could do until I could get in to see the doctor!:) It seemed to help some.
Saw the NP and she prescribed Prevacid 1/2 a day and we wil re-evaluate in 2 weeks. Well, I *KNOW* that dose isn’t high enough and I’m sure she does too. So, I fully expect to increase that dose. I’m giving him a full tablet in the cheek twice a day (one unexpired, one expired).
My question: we are still symptomatic on it. Spits up some. Moans and groans t/o naps (clearing of the throat). His biggest spit up is at 4-5am, usually 2-3 hours after his only bottle of the day (I breastfeed but give him one bottle at 1-2am to give myself a break: Enfamil Gentlease). His stomach will kind of “hiccup” and then out comes all this formula. Maybe I’m giving him too much?! He always has pretty big burps (several) after feeding, sometimes wet burps, esp when the next dose of Prevacid is needed.:) Should he still be symptomatic being on 30mg of Prevacid (granted, one of the solutabs being given is 3.5 years old)? I do notice a difference being on it but he is still symptomatic as far as the silent reflux still occuring. He still chokes and gags. Maybe this will get better with time? He has only been on the unexpired Solutabs for 2-3 days.
I still have Zegerid 40mg packets left from my daughter. Zegerid did NOT work for her – she had terrible gas on it and was brutally constipated. So, I do have those leftover from her. However, my first son was on Zegerid and did really well on it. Should I give those a try along with the Prevacid? Because I am going to run out of Prevacid soon (I’m self-prescribing my son’s Prevacid dose).
Can I try OTC Prevacid or Prilosec? If so, how do I do that? My son is 6 weeks old and 9lbs.
I should also say that I have a strong let-down with breast-feeding and this exascerbates his spitting up/gas.
Thank you so much for the advice. I’m really out of shape with all of this…I used to be so up on it but now that there are so many OTC options, I’d like to see if I can use that to my advantage.

The meds won’t stop the spit up, they ‘just’ address the pain…Ok, I’d look at the dosing chart and figure out dose from there.
