Giving Meds–how–help

Hi. I’m supposed to be giving my twins (4 months old, 2 months corrected)–boy girl–approx. 3 cc of compounded prilosec. But how?

I have tried to use 3 individual 1 cc syringes and squirt in into the back towards her cheek. I do so one drop at a time and she cries and foams at the mouth and half ends up coming up. then i’m not sure how much comes up or how much to give to her again. I’ve tried blowing on her face to get her to swallow or tickling her or stuff like that and she just foams it up while gagging, crying, adn twisting her head.

I’ve also tried going the fast method of squirting it all into her mouth. Same result as above. I’ve tried sugar water on syringes but nothing. Now she knows what a syringe looks like.

I’ve also tried the pacifier dispenser. Ih the beginning thsi worked. I would try to put more b/c there inevitably ends up some left in nipple. But now, this method now longer works. She sees the pacifier and just refused to suck, let alone put it in her mouth without gagging.

Any suggestions????

At my wits end. Am supposed to be giving it 3 X a day. I know it works for her, but i have to get it into her.

Hopefully someone else will chime in here, but Zegerid is an immediate release ppi, like compounded Prilosec, and we are able to mix it with food. I know several moms have mixed it with just an ounce of formula or breastmilk and given it that way. You just have to be sure that she finishes the bottle.

I’ve also mixed it with a teeny bit of oatmeal and spoonfed it.

What worked the best though, was squirting a little bit in the back of his mouth and then putting his pacifier in to help him suck it down.

I remember how frustrating it can be. For some reason or other, either he figured out that the medicine helped or I got better at giving it to him. Eventually, he took it fine, and now sucks it down with no problems.

How old does a child have to be to take zegerid. the gi doc said something about it being bad for kidneys at my dd age (4 mth actual–2 mths corrected) b/c of sodium i think. i don’t think thats true though. my dd’s gm called and spoke w/dr phillips from marci-kids and i think he said zegerid too.

zegerid and properly compounded prilosec are the same thing minus the flavouring, so if zegerid is bad for the kidneys, in theory, the prilosec should be as well. BUT, many babies have been on it from a much younger age without problems, and my dd has been on CaraCream for a VERY long time. If the suspension is made without flavouring, as it should be, it will taste very bad, which might be why it’s not going down so easily. The flavouring degrades the med. I just wanted to give you hope that it gets better. It used to be such a fight with dd and she would cry and spit it out. The whole shebang. But like Naomi all of a sudden one day something clicked and now she holds the syringe with me and gulps it down in a couple seconds. Amazing! I tried doing it with the bottle but eventually Kate decided she(she’s solely bf)that the bottle was not for her so I just squirt it in her cheek with a syringe. Works like a charm!
