InactiveHas anyone’s little ones been vaccinated yet? Seth’s ped. just got their first batch in (very limited supply) and I am still on the fence about getting it for him but afraid if I wait too long to decide we will miss out. TIA.

InactiveCooper is not getting it for various reasons but mainly b/c of his egg allergy and what it took to get the regular flu shot (3.5hrs, 6 pokes, and 2tsps of benadryl) and I don’t want to put him through that again. I know many children in my area who have gotten it and I have only heard of 2 bad “reactions”. 1 child broke out in hives and had to go to the ER b/c her airway started to close up and another child got H1n1 the day after the shot… probably was already exposed and couldn’t be helped. I would do your research and decide on your own. I personally am not getting it either (even being preggo) for various reasons, but mainly b/c I never gotten the regular flu shot before and didn’t when I was preggo with Cooper and haven’t this go round either and well I am not 100% comfortable with what kind of reaction I may have or my baby either. But again it is a very personal decision and only you can make it! HTH.

InactiveThis is a really tough one…. we are not getting it as Carter can not get any more vaccs, but I am not getting it for Dylan as I can’t get my hands on a single dose shot and the multi vile doses that most of the peds are getting have the preservatives in them that I don’t agree with. If I could get a single dose shot for myself/David/Dylan, we would probably all get it to protect Carter who has the airway issues but I can’t so we are taking our chances. Also, I believe the mist as the regular flu mist has live virus, so definitely a no for us around Carter.
This is a really tough one…… The virus is nasty, but I am afraid of the multi vile doses so a no for us…….November 3, 2009 at 5:04 pm #64434Anonymous
InactiveWe are not getting the vaccine either. Eli is allergic to eggs so he cannot get one and with Isaac we decided not to after talking to the ped..she is not a fan of it

Keymastermy boys got the ‘regular’ flu shot, well actually they got the mist.
I am on the fence about the H1N1…there’s a really great fact page by dr sears that tells what is in all the doses- it’s broken down by company/manufacturer
http://www.askdrsears.com/thevaccinebook/archives/2009_09_01_archive.aspso, to be honest, I don’t know what we’ll do. I *think* I am leaning towards not getting it for them…

Inactivethanks and hi to all of the oldies!
Laura, thanks for the link. This is so hard. If we do get it, I think we will try for the mist too. Stacey, please post back if Hailey has any reactions.Beth, I am a little late but congrats on your pregnancy!!November 6, 2009 at 8:31 pm #64455Anonymous
InactiveWe did a lot of debating about this, and finally got it for the whole family last Friday. Our decision was even harder than you guys in the USA, because our vaccines were made with adjuvants, which are kind of scary. Here in Toronto, less than 33 percent of people were going to get the vaccine. Then last week a healthy 13 year old boy in our community of Vaughan got mild flu symptoms, and died of H1N1 two days later. The same happened to some other children. Seeing that boy’s face in the paper and listening to his devastated parents on the news was so horrific, that we decided to do it. Actually, it turned things around so much here, that everyone was lining up to vaccinate their children. We had to line up for 6 hrs to wait for a shot!!! Sarah had a seizure from a season flu vaccine last year, so it wan extra hard choice.

Inactivelori~ how did your kids do with the vaccine??
and was there any underlining issues the 10 year old boy had who died of it???we are debating getting it for sienna as well.. because of her chronic congestion.. i feel like she needs it.. but i am sooo scared to give it to her expecially because she has only ever had ONE vaccine.. and is only 11 months old..November 8, 2009 at 8:39 pm #64470Anonymous
InactiveWell, we are going to do it. Seth has an appt. tomorrow afternoon. His ped. only has the injectible kind so that is what we are getting. I also think it has to be given in two doses but not 100% sure yet.
Lori, we are doing it for the same reason as you. I keep hearing about these otherwise healthy kids contacting the virus and dying. It is so tragic and scary.Seth is in preschool and seems to catch everything that goes around so I will feel better once he is vaccinated.November 9, 2009 at 8:51 am #64479Anonymous
InactiveOurs here has to be given in 2 doses according to Health Canada, but the WHO is trying to say that they only need one dose. Our vaccine is different than yours though, it containts adjuvant, so you are definitely luckier than we are.
I found that once we had it done, there was no looking it back, so it took the stress of making the decision away.Good luck.November 9, 2009 at 8:52 am #64480Anonymous
InactiveJust a heads up… it REALLY does hurt. They say that the adjuvant in ours makes it hurt more, but it hurt more than a seasonal flu shot. My arm just started to feel better at about the 1 week mark, so have some advil or tylenol on hand and an ice pack at home just in case.

InactiveWe are not getting vaccinated. I was on the fence for a while and there were 2 shots reserved for the boys but I called and told the nurse to give them to someone else.
We don’t normally do any type of flu shot vaccine and both boys have a very difficult time with vaccines. period. The only time I EVER had a flu shot was when I was PG with Landen. My OB hounded me and hounded me to get it. 7 days later, I came down with Bell’s Palsy and I had it for 6 weeks. I was lucky to recover fully from it. Yeah, I am just not comfortable with it at all. It’s just not for us, but I can totally understand any persons reason for vaccinating against flu…it can be really scary. I think it is important that everyone read up on the risks/benefits. It’s a tough call.jilly782009-11-09 14:36:03
