HAPPY Chaka Kahn, as we say here in Casa de Chaos, er, Casa Hellbennt!!!!Happy New Year!!!Love,Laura, Jonah, Ari & JohnThis recipe is from my Grandma (Naomi, 1902-1985). She was of Germanic-Jewish descent & her family was in the USA ‘early’ (she was born in the US, as was her mother)…
The recipe calls for using a blender (no grating!).
A colleague of mine says the blender wasn’t invented in the days of our foremothers and,
therefore, using a blender is not ‘traditional…’I googled, and the blender was invented in the 1920s & it looks like it was made for commercial
use in the 30s…
So, I’m not sure *how* my grandmother would have made latkes before then…
It’s a Hanukah Miracle!
Well, the recipe is EASY, DELICIOUS and IS traditional in MY family!
The choice is yours: grate your knuckles, follow a simple recipe, or go buy some!LATKES
1/4 cup milk
you can substitute other ‘milks’ for special diets:- Home Made Hemp Milk Recipe
- Tempt Brand Hemp Milk (seems to be ok for those who are corn-lite)
- Organic Canned coconut milk: Native Forest ClassicOrganic Canned Coconut Milk: Thai Kitchen brand
2 eggs
Egg substitute works as well: 3 Tablespoons water with 1Tablespoon chia seeds. Sit in fridge 10-15 min
1 Tablespoon diced onion
1 teaspoon salt
1 & 1/2 cup cubed raw potato
1/4 cup flourcan use alternative flours:
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Put all ingredients in blender – Grandma said you had to put them in the above order- pulse 5 seconds or so.
Batter is uneven- liquidy, etc.
Fry in HOT oil (my mom says Wesson)
Enjoy!
Happy Holidays to you and your family!!! I’ve never had Latkes, they look yummy!December 21, 2008 at 2:03 pm #59786hellbennt
Keymasterwell, these (latkes) are a bit unusual in that there is no grating potatoes (or your knuckles
!)…they come out YUMMY- think of hashbrowns
– and they’re EASY! I’ve posted this in the past and I do believe people have had success even with rice milk, etc and even egg substitute for those who cannot do egg
InactiveHappy Chanukah, Laura! Thanks for the recipe again. I’ve been so lazy that we’ve been buying prepared latkes for the past few years. I guess I never liked the grating, but never noticed that yours doesn’t involve any!
