Keymasterhere’s all about fenugreek: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html
there’s a tea at wholefoods called “Mother’s Milk”
you can buy that- my lactation consultant said to read what’s in the tea (probably has fenugreek!) and buy all the ingredients seperately (don’t know why?) but it seems to me that the tea alone might help…
lots of mamas swear by eating a lot of oatmeal, too…
I think it’s the malt in the beer? I’m in miami & the Latin community swears by drinking this drink called Malta…The Jamaicans swear by drinking Giness (sp?)…I don’t know, but hey, sounds yummy
…from here: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/herbal-rem_c.html
“One midwife suggests taking an essential fatty acid supplement, because the fatty acids help us to make the hormones we need for breastfeeding. She suggests trying it for at least a week. Reportedly, some moms have had luck with this, especially if they are on a really low fat diet. This is most likely not a true galactagogue, but may be helpful nutrition-wise if mom is missing this in her diet.
Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, and is reported safe for nursing moms.”

InactiveYou guys are just fabulous!
Great suggestions that I haven’t seen anywhere else! The yahoo BF group doesn’t let you post right away anymore because of spam so I haven’t been able to ask them yet..
Christine-I am with you on the uptight thing. I hear it’s a firstborn quality…true for you?
My hubby just lol when he read that. (I make him read now b/c he is a doubting thomas…)We nursed first (he gets maybe 1/4 oz.) then bottle fed 3 oz. then pumped for 20 mins ea side every 2.5 hrs. today-sleeping 11-4 and pump again am. I need to add 1x Beer, fenugreek, mother’s milk tea, reglan, flaxseed oil, oatmeal.
KRISTEN: Can you tell me a little more about how the milk will work post reglan?
Maybe he won’t forget how to nurse before I can get it to come back in. Hopefully, we won’t have OAL again but if so, I think Sudafed is the way to go since block nursing didn’t really make a dent.
I am so relieved to see your helpful suggestions.
I will let you guys know how we do – He’s waking for a feed…gotta run!

InactiveYeah, I’m a firstborn.
Sounds like pumping is going well for you. I hope you can get your supply back up and hopefully return to full time nursing (if that’s what you want). That’s great that he will still nurse. The pumping can get very old and tiring, so if you can get him back to nursing it will make your life a lot easier.
Good luck.

InactiveFenugreek worked well for me when I took it with my 1st DD. It has a common side effect that it makes your sweat smell like maple syrup but there are worse things to smell like.
However, I stopped taking it because I thought we were through the worst of things but then a week or so later realized that I still needed the boost. Well, when I started taking it again it didn’t work anymore. I have a friend who had the same experience – worked great, stopped, started again, didn’t work. So if it’s working for you just make sure you don’t need it anymore before you quit taking it.A word of caution about the reglan. One of the side effects is diarrhea. This can be bad because you need to stay hydrated in order for your body to produce milk. On top of that, I got diarrhea so bad that I was basically running to the bathroom every hour. I definitely increased my milk supply but I simply couldn’t handle the side effects. I had to stop after only 3-4 days. Just be careful. Honestly, I’d try the other suggestions first and save the reglan as a last resort.

InactiveIs there a difference between Reglan and domperidone? My OB usually calls in Reglan and for 30 days and hadn’t heard of the other which Dr. Newman recommends. Also, Dr. Newman said that the whole problem was not OAL but a poor latch in his email to me!!!

So I am taking away the bottle too so he won’t get lazy and letting him graze all day to get better results than with the pump while I wait for the script. I hope I am not starving him. I need fenugreek too since I don’t have time to shower and the maple syrup is bound to smell better!!!!

Thanks for the tip Karen-I think I’ll stock up on some “binding” foods!
Talk about wanting to nurse somebody badly-the only positive thing so far is the once a day beer!

InactiveYou certainly are committed!!
And I know what you mean about wanting to nurse badly. I hope you have some supportive people around you. Is dh supportive of you nursing and working to get your supply back? All I heard is, “why don’t you just bottle feed? It’s so much easier.” And my personal favorite, “Millions of babies grew up on formula and they turned out o.k.!” Yeah, I know millions of babies grew up on formula and turned out o.k. I’m one of them
but I wanted my babies to grow up on breast milk and I was going to do whatever it took to give it to them. It nearly killed me
but I did it and I’ll never regret it. So, if this is what you want to do, don’t let people discourage you. How’s Grant doing?

InactiveAmanda,
As far as I know domperidone is no longer available in the US. It’s too bad because is has the same benefit but without the diarrhea side effect. You can get it in Canada and many other countries. Good luck with everything. I hope you can avoid taking the reglan.

THE Dr. Newman?!!??
Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

InactiveI know how cool is that!!!
He emailed me right away:Dear Ms. Hecker,
I agree with you that reflux is just diagnosed too often, and the
problem is so frequently not better and sometimes even worse when changing the baby to formula. However, the problem of overactive letdown is a problem of poor latch, not of too much milk. Yes, so get domperidone and start relactating and get the baby on the breast.
So, see the Protocol to increase breastmilk intake by the baby,
attached, and use the video clips at the websites below to help you use the Protocol.Domperidone could be helpful in this situation, but should be used in
conjunction with the Protocol, not as a “magic bullet”. Contact your
physician to see if s/he will prescribe it for you. If your physician
is not comfortable or familiar with using this medication, please find
attached a prescription for it.Also later he sent this in response to reglan vs. domperidone:Domperidone is a much safer drug.Jack Newman, MD, FRCPCGrant is starving right now and giving me what for on the subject of making him latch on right-even at just 8 wks.! I give him a bottle when I can’t stand it anymore but for the most part, we are nursing. I just got the Reglan-my OB didn’t know what domperidone was. In the meantime, I eat peanut butter and wait….
As for the dh, he was on the bottle ship and all the quotes mentioned above until he saw how much it meant to me and how crazy I was trying to put things back together and now I think he understands as much as a guy can…I say for every baby both parents should lactate!!!! How cool would that be?!
Geez I hope this all works, the mental shift of wanting to nurse is enough to kill you when it doesn’t pull together. She gave me a 7 day supply of reglan so I guess we’ll know soon enough!June 1, 2006 at 11:29 pm #8986Anonymous
InactiveHI girls-not to jinx anything but so far so good. My milk is back in but not at the OAL level yet. Grant seems happier, Today we nursed exclusively and he ate every 2.5 or 3 hours except his night tank up run 6,8,10! His poop is totally different now than previously on BFing. Not nearly as often and thicker rather than the diahrea like conditions we had before. I think the reflux can now be addressed-he needs zantac and mylanta on a consistent basis as he is still “holding” the burps down. I think aloe vera would also help as well if I could get him to take it. He still has some gas but nothing abnormal and Levsin seems to work fine. Thank God for all your help and this great site. Together all these moms surpass the best GI group anywhere right? I am just thrilled to be nursing my little boy again!

InactiveI am so glad you can nurse. You should be really proud of how hard you worked to get it back. I stoped nursing when it just all seemed like too much. The reflux, MSPI, latching problems, OAL. It has been months and I still miss nursing and wish I could have tried a little harder to make it work. Good Job!

Great news!! I’m so happy for you that you are able to nurse again, and that Grant is doing better.
