InactiveOur children’s medicines are super sweet but for some reason the infant vitamins are not flavored. They literally do taste like dirt.

InactiveAny feedback from Erica and Denise re: the banana flavoring from Frontier Coop? I just ordered it and was curious what they thought

InactiveI ended up using goats milk 50/50 with the neocate to make it a sweeter flavor because I just could not get my son to take straight neocate. He was older when we switched (almost 4 mo) and the older they get the harder it is to switch.
He did eat it better with the banana flavoring, but I would add slowly.
How many oz is Evie taking in 24 hr period?

InactiveShe is bf, so I really don’t know how many oz. she has. I’m starting slow by adding one bottle of Neocate each night and hopefully, she’ll be fully switched over in 2 weeks. So far, the face she makes when I give her the bottle is worse than the face she made when I gave her Zantac!!

InactiveSorry, I didn’t mean add the milk slowly, well I guess I did if you were mixing bm and neocate. That would be the best way to start instead of going back and forth. Add 1 oz of neocate to a bottle of bm if you pump, add another oz the next day and just keep adding. Now if you don’t pump or have any saved, I don’t know what to tell you.
I was originally talking about adding the flavoring. I would flavor it slowly, just a slight amount until you get it to the taste that you think she will take best.I have tasted everything and so that’s how I flavored it- to my taste
and now I’m sure you think I’m crazy, but I have tasted everything I have put into Owen. And believe me the Prevacid is NASTY!!May 9, 2007 at 9:11 pm #32764Anonymous
InactiveI actually tried bm/neocate mix and it failed miserably. But, I got my flavoring in the mail today and she loved it. I am very pleased. I will use it for my smoothies!!

InactiveDid you put the flavoring in the neocate and she loved it??
Owen was older when I tried all this flavoring and I just think he was set in his taste prefrences. I used bananas, the flavor and then went to the goats milk which worked the best although my doctor was against it. He’s eating better than ever now though, so I can’t say that I agreed with the doc!
Sounds like things are going better!

InactiveCarson had a hard time switching from BF to Neocate. We tried flavoring with crystal light (per the nutritionist) and everything under the sun. I finally bought Rice Dream and use that instead of the water. The rice milk tastes a bit like melted ice cream. The Rice Dream (or a generic) is 13 calories per ounce so it gives a bit more calories for these kids that can’t eat many other foods. It does make the bottles more expensive because we could be mixing it with water but at least he drinks the Neocate now!!

InactiveHi,
My name is Jess. I have a quick question for you as your child is already on neocate, my daughter is 6mth old. She is allergic to everything that goes into her mouth – including neocate. Shes in hospital at the moment, but we are in a country town and the doctor wont send her to a specialist. Do you know where i can get information on the formula???
I hope that your baby gets better quick!!!!

InactiveJess: I hope your daughter is released from the hospital soon with a plan for what to do at home. We use a lot of Neocate. Our local grocery store is HyVee and they order it in for me – that way I can buy a couple cans a week instead of springing for a case or two at a time. You can also buy it online from the company at:
http://www.shsna.com/pages/neocate_inf_formula.htm
They also have an “insurance letter” that you may wish to send to your insurance co to see if they will pay for it. I would also suggest you call your local WIC office to see if you qualify. If you do, they will give you *certificates* that you could use when purchasing the Neocate. It is very expensive and I would start researching right away!
I really hope your daughter is doing better soon. It may take a while before the other formula is out of your daughter’s system and it does take a while before the Neocate is the only thing in her body.

InactiveHi Brenda,
I am from South Australia, and the paediatrician organised a governent authorisation code so that I can purchase 8 cans of formula for $4.90.
The doctor reviews her daily, its a bit scary because we dont know from one day to the next what we are doing and if Lacey will be out of hospital, they are thinking about putting her on solids tomorrow but we will see.
Thanks for the quick reply and your advice!!!!

InactiveI too am wondering about the best method to flavor neocate. I have a question for Brenda about using the rice milk. So you basically just add one scoop of Neocate to one ounce of rice milk? Did you start this before your son turned 1? My ds is 10 months and I’m wondering if this is safe to try. Did your nutritionist suggest it?
I would also love to hear from foleybelle if you did in fact add the banana flavoring directly to the neocate?
Thanks!
Rekha

InactiveHi rekha,
Have you tried things like mixing a small portion of their favourite food with it, eg stewed apple, or custard, this will safely flavour the milk just enough to take away the yuck taste of neocate. Personally my daughter takes the neocate happily, as she was on Pepti-juniour before that and she hated it so the new stuff is a breeze. I got to the stage where i had to add a small portion of sugar to the milk – which is safe as the nurses and doctors recommend that we add brown sugar to warm water to ease constipation.

InactiveHi Jess, I’m from Geelong in Vic. Nice to have another Aussie on the board. Alana is one Pepti-Jnr, I’ve never had any problem with her taking it (other than when she’s sick). I have often wondered if babies have some sixth sense about what they are allergic to…ie she doesn’t mind the Pepti because her system can toleratie it, but your little one didn’t like it because she was allergic…if you know what I mean.
If you want a referall to a specialist, you could ask your GP, or ask for a transfer to the Adelaide kids hospital (if you are not already there). Put it in writing if you need to. I am sure they are doing everything they can but sometimes you need to go to the top so to speak. Maybe ask to speak to the Social Worker at the hospital and see if they can advocate for you.
BTW…I do the brown sugar for constipation thing (on days Alana has bananas
) and it works a treat…better than any other thing I have tried
