InactiveThe pepcid is a chewable (dye is less in mint flavor) so I put it in a baggie and tapped it with a hammer until it turns to dust and put it in applesauce. Tastes like mint. He’s taking it fine…so far I am seeing major results already for this regimine of 15 mg prevacid around 9 am and again before supper around 4:30 and then pepcid close to 7. Bring on the drugs!

InactiveHmm, does it need to be in applesauce or could I do it similar to a Prevacid Solutab? Anika takes those pretty good but she’s not really taking anything on a spoon just of yet.
Also, (gah, I feel so dense sometimes…) as I re-read through this thread are you all saying that Mylanta before or with a dose of Prevacid Solutab would work similar to using the CaraCream or Zegrid?

Inactiveas fine as the hammer powders it, i would think that it would work fine in a bottle as well as in food.
for the prevacid, i think you need caracream Or just zegerid to get the effect of using it without regard to food and stomach emptiness timing. the mylanta is just for additional in between help and doesn’t hold you to timing. Also mylanta can be used to soften the hardness of zantac. BUT i understand mylanta not to help with PPI’s like prevacid and timing. somebody chime in and let me know if i got the lesson wrong. man these meds are complicated!

InactiveYeah, that’s what I was trying to understand about the Mylanta… I get so confused!
It all would be so much easier if our doctors would just give us all the high end of Zegrid! I’m thinking about asking for that switch come January because 1- we will be under new insurance so hopefully we won’t need “prior approval” 2- our Rx refills will run out and 3- Anika will be 5 months and I think timing the Prevacid around meals will definitely start getting more difficult. If nothing else we might ask for Prevacid capsules and Caracream.Anyway, what I know about Mylanta is that our doctor told us it was an immediate relief but it’s like a band-aid and it’s a long term “fix.” I figured we might end up using it as a bit of “maintenance” or relief since we aren’t on 30 mg’s of Prevacid like I think Anika could really use. But now I really don’t know how Mylanta is the most effective (before or after a meal?) and then when you mention the Pepcid complete I wonder if that might be a better over the counter “maintenance” thing for us?
Right now this is our schedule:
4:30 – 5:30 AM – 15 mg’s Prevacid Solutab
5:30 – 6:30 AM – bottle with probiotic
10-10:30 AM – bottle with probiotic
1:00 PM- 7.5 mg’s Prevacid Solutab
2-2:30 PM – bottle with probiotic
5:30 – 6:30 – PM bottle with probiotic
9:30 – 11:30 PM ? (whenever she wakes) – bottle with probiotic
We were giving her the Prevacid in three 7.5 mg doses but a few times we missed the one before the last bottle and didn’t give it to her because she was ready to eat NOW. She ate fine but then the next AM I gave her 15 mg’s and she seemed to do better. For the most part she’s a bit fussy with the evening (5:30 – 6:30 bottle) but then takes the last bottle like a dream (almost sleep feeding?). We had a hard time giving her Prevacid before that evening bottle because by the time I would pick her up from daycare she was ready to eat so I didn’t have 30 minutes (let alone an hour that really seems to work better for her) to wait to feed. Anyway, could I give her some Pepcid Complete just before that bottle?
I guess it’s a bit of a pipe dream but I get so jealous when I see other Mom’s who have NO STRUGGLE WHATSOEVER feeding their babies. They just don’t realize how good they have it. I know what we deal with is a fraction of what some of you have going on but still, I feel like we can’t really even enjoy the good feedings because I’m “on guard” for it going bad…

InactiveDr. Phillips did say to space the prevacid and the pepcid 2 hours apart. I’d think you could put the night does of pepcid into that bottle??? maybe try it and see how it goes?
I know what you mean about the pipe dream-nursing is supposed to be delightful and easy bonding experience instead of a wrestling match! I can’t imagine doing it in public discreetly!

InactiveHey, I say you are a saint just nursing let alone nursing a reflux baby!
YOU GO GIRL!
Yeah, I saw what you said about the 2 hours apart…. But based on our schedule above (sorry to hijack your thread- I seem to be doing that lately
) I’d think I could give Anika a dose of Pepcid as soon as I get her in the evenings and then immediately feed her and that could really help with our evenings and perhaps make-up for the fact that we can’t quite get 30 mg’s of the Prevacid.October 30, 2006 at 2:38 pm #16837Anonymous
InactiveOh sorry, Leanne. I see now. Hijack away…glad to help! Thanks for the support on nursing…man, i need it!

Let us know how the pepcid goes if you try it in a bottle- sure is hard to make a baby wait…maybe if you add the pepcid to the regimine, you can take your prevacid and split it between just 2 doses like we do (that’s straight from Dr. Phillips on the 2 split for prevacid) maybe journal for the next 2 wks. and see how it goes and if nothing else, you can always go back to what you’re doing now. the only other thing i’d suggest is adding zantac to the routine and cushioning the taste with mylanta. that could be given in that evening time too when you need something to work fast and not stop a meal but it would again have to be 2 hours apart…lots of moms here i think do both prevacid and zantac (ignore this if you’ve already tried it or are doing it-I have a hard time keeping up with my feeble oxygen deprived brain!)
you’d think these docs would understand about the 4-10 mos of age stomach emptying and understand the dose they give us has to last ALL DAY not just for a few precious hours!!!!!

InactiveOK, not to talk about your boobs…

But HECK YEAH GIRL!
Nursing sucked so bad for me with Maxon that I didn’t even bother with Anika… right choice for us but I still feel guilty and I’m extremely supportive of those who do it!
Hmmm, so now I was thinking of trying to give Anika the pepcid in a medicine syringe with water or something then immediately feeding her a bottle but you are suggesting I crunch it up and just dump it in the bottle. Wow, so easy and yet I didn’t think of that! The only concern might be if she doesn’t take the full bottle… I guess deal with that as another issue. I mean, either make a tiny bottle with the meds (1 – 2 oz) and then pour more in after she finishes that or perhaps (one can only hope) the Pepcid being in the bottle will be enough to encourage her to finish. Right now we are just making 4 oz bottles to begin with so it’s not like they are huge!
I was reading on the Pepcid website though… seems like it’s almost like a combination of what Zantac does and what Mylanta does but all in one med?
Well we are already just on 2 doses with one being 15 mg’s and the other 7.5. I guess something else we could/ should consider is giving her 7.5 mg’s in the AM and 15 at 1 PM? Gah, it’s like we are always guessing, plotting, hoping, etc…

InactiveOk well we tried the Pepcid Complete last night and I have to say, I was pretty darned impressed. She took her bottle like a dream… we even put 2.25 more in her bottle and she took that too! That was for a total of 6.25 oz! Then after that she was just in a really good mood and enjoying being with us. It was such a noticeable difference that Maxon said, “baby is happy.”
Now I did end up getting the berry flavored because I thought if I needed to ever give it to Max every now and then that he would take that better than the mint. I’m just real jaded on mint because of the Zanatac I guess. So since it was magenta in color I just crushed it and then put in a small cup with water and administered it like a Prevacid Solutab. I think tonight I will just crush it and put it in the bottle and see how that works. It might be pink but that’s OK with me.

I am so happy for you & the whole family-reflux is shared, right?I sure hope the pepcid continues to work-$8 bucks for a prevacid supplement-maybe they won’t find out how well it works and go up on the price!!!we avoid dyes b/c ds #1 had major problems with red dye but hey, if i didn’t have to watch it, I sure wouldn’t!!!

InactiveYeah, it definitely is shared!
