help = 4 month old not gaining

the weight gain thing is so frustrating. Finn has always had trouble gaining and it often sent me on an emotional roller coaster week to week. He was in the 10th but now i think he’s down to the 5th. For us I think it was the amount of spit up (although other babies don’t seem to have any trouble gaining despite huge spit ups).
Also–according to my lactation consultant and info on kellymom.org, weight gain slows down at 4 months in breastfed babies to an average amount of 3.5-5 ozs. per week. And…reflux is supposed to ‘peak’ between 4 and 7 months. Perhaps these two things combined are affecting your LO’s growth?
–oh and I would try TED too…:)

Don’t feel bad…not at all. What you are going through is HARD!!!!!

I hope the new med does the trick. I *think* you will see a difference now that you are on the solutab versus the suspension. The solutab should make a BIG difference.

Yes, Colleen you’re right about the weight gain slowing down in breastfed babies. I’m sure there are babies that disprove this fact (as there always it), but for us it was definitely the case. Both my boys dropped on the %iles b/w the 4-6 mths check ups & then again (significantly) b/w the 6-9mths check ups. Brodie did not have reflux & Evan has silent reflux… so, neither of them spit up @ all.

My ped has never blinked an eye b/c they both consistently gained… not always a lot, but still gained.

thanks for the info. sometimes I think I should just feed him formula, like my mom really really really wants me to do. But when he’s in pain and hysterical, the boob is the only thing that will calm him down, and I really don’t want to lose that.

I posted this during the early time of TED when I was questioning if I should continue or what… my mom was also pressuring w/ the formula angle. Nursing was so soothing & comforting to my ds (still is) & that was a main reason for me keeping on…

the links that laura and Erin gave are good ones– bfeeding helps beyond just the comfort…
hang in there! if you want to stick with bfeeding and you are able then try not to worry about what other people tell you (although I know that’s difficult too!)
