InactiveI called my pediatrician yesterday to let him know that my daughter is not responding well to the treatments he has her on, Nutramigen and Prevacid. So they told me they were going to get her an appt with the GI, the appointment is Jan 18.
What am I supposed to do with a baby who will not eat, and vomits up what little bit she does take in, and is pain for 5 weeks?
She has dropped in her percentages, not due to losing weight but due to failing to gain weight. I am afraid of what will happen in 5 weeks if I don’t get this under control.
Why does it have to be such a struggle to get medical attention for her? Any advice on what to do until her appt?

Keymasterfax fax fax the doctor.
1st: THANK DOCTOR

then: STATE FACTS- baby’s weight, symptoms, current meds & dose
then state: (this is conservative dosing from ‘my day’ LOL
, but it’s still ‘high’ & should help some until appt w/ GI!)pediatric dosing for prevacid is 1.5mgs – 3mgs per kilo.
baby weighs x kilos. and is on xmgs per day.
at 3mgs per day, baby can be on xmgs of prevacid per day. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR INCREASING DOSE TO THIS
!!!THANKS for GI appt

then FAX GI dr with same type of info & request consult w/ ped for this request in prevacid increase

InactiveHello and welcome,
I agree with Laura. See if you can work with your current doctor on getting her Prevacid increased. Prevacid is an excellent PPI and most babies do very well on it IF they are on a high enough dose. It took me 6-9 weeks to finally convince Myles’ doctor to up his dose but once he was on the right dose he was a new baby….pain free, eating well, sleeping well, happy.
Here’s a website with current research into PPI dosing for infants. I printed and faxed this info to Myles’ doctor and it did finally sway her to put him on the higher dose he needed. http://www.marci-kids.com
Good luck and glad you found us. I hope you’re baby is feeling better soon.

InactiveThanks for your post. I called my PED this morning and let him have it, so I am taking her in at 3:30 for a weight check and to discuss the dosing of her meds, I have printed some info off the website to take with me. The GI’s office has also put her on a list so that if anyone cancels , they can get her in sooner.

InactiveSounds like a great plan. Good luck and please let us know how her appt goes.

InactiveWe went to the DR. Tues and she had lost wieght, so my ped immedialty ordered an pyloric stenonis ultrasound, and got her in with the GI on Wed.
The GI has scheduled her for an Upper GI and PH Test, he also took her off the Nutramigen and put her on Alimentan, he says he gets better results with that. I feel like I am finally getting somewhere……
Has anyone had experience with these test? What should I expect?

InactiveMyles had the upper GI. It’s not a definitive test for reflux because the baby can have reflux but not have an episode during the test, but the Upper GI can pick up on structural abnormalities. It was not a bad test. They give the baby some Barium to drink in a bottle (you may want to bring her own bottle if she’s particular) and then some techs strap the baby down (Myles was not strapped down) and they take x-rays. Myles cried some but it really wasn’t that bad.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

Keymasterif you suspect DGE maybe you can ask for this test too (it’s different than upper gi, but related i think) and a swallow study (looks to see if there’s aspiration) again i think it’s a ‘related’ test?
also: ask if it’s a bravo ph test…

InactiveHi! I’m new to this website and forum, but I need help! My DS is 11 wks. old and has had reflux since he was 2 wks. Finally we got on Zantac, and after a week of nothing, our DR. put us on Prevacid; 7.5mg 1x a day!! I called him after 5 days and I quoted some Marci-kids info. and he refuses to up his dosage. He says adults are to have 30 mg. per day, so any more for my son would be too much. He didn’t really care about my research. Dr. Phillips (Marci-kids) said he should be on up to 30 mg. spread over 3x a day and then Zantac once at pm. I told my dr. that we continued him on Zantac at pm and he said not to do this, that it could cause probs. Since we get 15 mg. tabs, I have been cutting them in half and giving my son 7.5 mg. in the am and 7.5 mg. in the pm.
My question/frustration is whether or not I should just look for a new dr. or continue trying this to see if it works. In everyones experience, how long does it take to see results? And how long does everyone wait b/t doses of Prevacid?
Thank you all for your help!!

InactiveHello and welcome,
I’d look for another doctor right away. Also try printing the marci-kids information and faxing it or brining it along to your appointment. I think seeing it in black and white may be more effective than hearing a mom say over the phone that she read this or that on the internet.
You can maybe try faxing it to your current pediatrician with a nice cover letter thanking him for his help (it’s always best to be pleasant even if you want to wring his neck), explaining that the current treatment plan is not working for your son, and requesting that he be allowed to try the marci-kids’ dosing. If your’re going to look for another doctor anyway, it may be worth a last ditch effort in trying to convince your current pediatrician.
Good luck and glad you found us.

I would try & get in to a ped GI & in the meantime fax your doctor (see purple post above
)it took 12 days for us to see the PPI really work (see intro for link to ‘Prevacid 101’ to read how/when to administer)
I would give the PPI am/pm & zantac inbetween (2-5 hrs separate from the PPI)
glad you found us!
