HELP ME IM SCARED ANS DESPERATE

My son is 7 weeks old and he started out on Godd Start Formula. When he drank you could hear him swallowing very loudly practically gulping the formula down. He would drink almost 4 ounces every two hours. As of Saturday he only drank a total of 11 ounces the entire day and sleep most of the day. On Sunday his appetite began to purk up put he was so fussy and just screaming like he was in pain. It use to be easy to soothe him but now its no use. We took him to the E.R. and they switched his milk to lactose free Enfamil. Now it was getting better until this morning when he would grunt to have a bowel movement and nothing came out. Then almost an hour later he did it again and when I checked it was a diaper full, even on this stomch. It was an odd brown color and looked like pasty glue.

Before Saturday his bowels where green and pure liquid and he spit up after every burp and while he slept and even hours after feeding him.

Please someone help me!!!!!!!!! Could he have reflux or GERD? His doctor wont do anything, we have an appointment at 3 today

I would like to hear what your doctor says. I don’t know if its GERD but it does sound like he might have an allergy or intollerance to the formula. He may need a formula like Nutramigen or Alimentum. I wish I had more answers for you. Let us know what you ped says.

Hi and welcome. It’s hard to know exactly what’s wrong, but with the bm’s you describe it sounds like he might not be tolerating his formula well. Laura’s intro (stickied in the introduce yourself forum) has lots of info about MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerance).

As for the pasty brown bm, that’s my typical experience with formula diapers- that they’re thick and pasty and brown (not mustard colour like breast fed bm’s).

I personally would take him back to your ped and talk to him about it. You might want to jot down the exact symptoms that you’ve been seeing, including how often. If you can get some video footage, that might also help them to figure out what the problem is. Good luck.

It’s hard to say from your description if your little guy has reflux, but I can tell you that both of my refluxers seemed fine in the early weeks. Then around a month of age there were early signs that I did not recognize at the time(but now I know it was the beginnings of reflux), and by 8 weeks things were getting very difficult, with refusing or fighting feedings and extreme irritabilty during and after feedings.

The gulping when eating may indicate some discomfort while feeding. Or, it could just be that the nipple is too fast for him. Does he choke or gag while eating?

You said he spits up a lot. That can be a sign of reflux, though all babies do spit up some. If he’s continually irritable and hard to console, that also can be an indication of reflux.

Let us know how the doctor’s appointment goes. I wish I could be more helpful.

I think that the fact that his bowels were pure liquid would indicate some sort of intolerance as well! i would look into a hypoallergenic formula as well, possibly before trying any meds

the diaper from this morning sounds like a normal diaper. i don’t think that the grunting a hour before he had a bm is out of the norm, either. it actually sounds like the lacto free formula is helping him. it is really normal for babies to have “blow-out” diapers that go up the back and up the stomach and out the legs and anywhere else you can think of.LOL!!

Sorry, I am not sure how old Landon is, but early on the grunting and groaning is quite normal as they get used to all those funny sensations- oh things were so much easier for them in the womb. There is just so much variability in normal poos. Maybe safe a diaper and show someone (nurse, dr etc) if you are worried and see what they think (I did that to my maternal child and health nurse- not rally sure how impressed she was ). I hope you have some luck with the DR.
