Help me reason with Ped!!!

I am new here so please bear with me if this has been brought up before… I had a really frustrating conversation with our pediatrician today. Joey started on Zantac almost a month ago. We had a honeymoon period that wore off right away (but we did have a few blissful days!)- he is now on Prevacid solutabs 7.5 Mg in the AM, and that too has seemed to wear off after 5 days. From everything I am reading it seems that that is a way low dose. I work in a medical setting and the nurses there even told me he should have that much 3x a day. I looked it up in our nurses perscription handbook and it also says he can have way more (as does MARCI). I called Joeys doc and he says that I am completely mistaken and must be misinterpreting everything I am reading- There is no way they would ever give that dose to a baby, much less an adult with an ulcer. He says I have a colicky baby and I should just get used to it, but we should try Prilosec in the meantime. In short, he treated me like a total idiot. I am I wrong or should I be looking for a new Ped? I understand that my baby will keep spitting up, but he is so clearly still in pain. The doc says that he is screaming because he hates the sensation of puking- its not the acidity… When the meds are working we have a whole different kid. What do you all think? Is my Ped right? Have you heard this reasoning before?

FYI: Joey is just over 4 months and was dx with reflus at 3.5 months.

HI and welcome!!! I don’t have a lot of time, but YOU ARE RIGHT!!! I would agree that Joey needs a higher dose! First of all, it’s great to hear that there IS documented evidence to support this in addition to marci-kids. I know from experience that Sarah needed the higher dosage and it worked wonders for her…but it’s still nice to hear that info. from several places. I would 100% no question look for another doctor who is more up to date on the treatment of reflux! For the sake of your sanity and Joey’s health and happiness…it’s a MUST!

I totally agree with Amy. A higher dose did wonders for Bryce too. I think it would definitely be a good idea to look for another doctor. You might even try a family practice doctor. That’s where we originally got our higher dose prescribed.

Ditto to what Amy said. You are right. I must admit I was a little skeptical at first about the dose (be you didn’t know that guys)…but now I am a convert…marci-kids all the way. Also ditto to Christine…our family Dr was more open and willing than our pead. Goodluck and don’t give up

I wonder if your ped and our old ped went to school together.

Except for yours at least wants your son on some dose..ours wanted us to

stop the medicine all together.

We were also put on 7.5 mgs to start and it didn’t make much progress at

all.

We finally told our doc that we were giving him 15mgs and they were okay

with that.

Now he is getting bigger, I think our dose needs to be reevaluated.

Fight for what you know is right…They are our children. We are with them all

the time…and yes, I know what you mean about the painful screams..IT is

just horrible…

Myles was miserable until he was finally put on the marci-kids dose (10 mgs / 3 times per day). Once he was on the right dose things turned around and he was a new baby! So yes, believe you are right, your ped is wrong.

Many doctors are not aware of this current research. Myles’ doctor (a family physician) was not aware of it and started him on a pathetically low dose – less than 4 mgs a day! It was a joke, but fortunately I was able to convince her by faxing the marci-kids info to her. If you cannot convince your current ped, I’d definitely look for another doctor.

Some of us have had better luck with family doctors. They see a lot of adult patients with reflux and they are familiar with reflux meds. I think they’re more sympathetic about the pain reflux causes because their adult patients can tell them how much it hurts. Myles’ doc may not have been aware of the marci-kids research but she was very sympathetic and she clearly acknowledged that my baby was in pain. And ultimately she did raise his dose.

I hope you find a doctor who will be more sympathetic and proactive in treating your son’s pain. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I would print off the marci-kids info, including the dosing memo from the top left side of the page and the list of docs that are on the team, and bring it or fax it to your doc. If he still isn’t willing to listen, then I would try to find a new doc… heck, I’d probably try to find a new one anyhow, b/c who wants to be put down.

Thank you all so much. It feels really good to be supported and know that I am not crazy. This reflux stuff is new to me and you all have been so helpful. I have an apt with a new Ped on Mon and I am hoping to get somewhere with her! I will keep you posted!

Run to a new pedi!! Or maybe even a specialist! I am having troubles with ours too, after our next appt, I am on the hunt. Your little one may be uncomfy from the sensation of reflux, but the acid and erosion is most definetly causing him pain. Zantac is a joke, and that dose of prevacid is too! I am lucky enough to have a good pal that is a Dr, and he wrote the rx in the amount I wanted. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands when it comes to the well being of your baby. Even if your dr was right, he has no right to make you feel stupid, which you are obviously not! I hope you get him to come around or you find a great new dr!!

If you took a poll you would see that most of us on this site had our peds tell us that same story. Find yourself a new doctor. I too had better luck with our family doctor than I did with a ped.
