InactiveHi, I am new to this board and just posted in the intro the other day. I believe my baby has silent reflux and have been on modified TED for a week now. We also went to the doctor and got Zantac prescription a week ago.
One main problem is my LO refuses to nurse and that was getting really bad before we went to the doctor. The Zantac started helping almost immediately. It was still a challenge to get her to nurse but a lot better. I thought that would be good enough to get me through the two weeks being on TED.
However, yesterday things got bad again. It is super challenging to get her to latch and when she does it is only for a few mins before she comes off screaming. I spent most of the past day and half constantly trying to either get her to eat or sleep. She won’t take a bottle so I have been expressing some to feed her via sippy cup or syringe.
But, I messed up and didn’t start pumping right when the problem started about a day and half ago and now I feel like my milk supply has dropped off hugely. I can’t get much from pumping so I have been hand expressing every chance I get but don’t get much that way either.
I will be going back to the doctor but he will probably suggest formula again as he did the last time. Given how bad things are I am considering supplementing with formula anyway because I don’t have enough for her to eat and she is soo hungry it is hard to get her to sleep either.
My questions are:
This seems super quick for her to have developed a tolerance for zantac -what do you ladies think? (stopped working 4 days after starting)
What can I do to increase my milk supply and how worried should I be? I am trying to eat lots, rest, and hand express lots too, but it is hard and I am not sure it is doing anything.
Is there a good link about the different types of formulas if I think she has a food sensitivity? I have seen some info on the posts I have read but no nothing about formulas and have very little time to search as I am spending all my time with my LO, eating, or expressing right now.
Any advice on how I get her to take formula since I have had no luck with bottles of EBM so far?
Thanks so much for any help!!!
Robyn

InactiveI should add that she is not gaining well. She hasn’t lost weight but stopped gaining for a week and then gained a bit after starting zantac and during the 4 days it was working. Now I am worried she will stagnate or lose weight and I want her to start growing really bad!

Keymasterhang in there, mama! If you want to keep breastfeeding, keep doing it!
switching to formula may or may not work and then you might regret it.Or switch. either way, we’ll support your decision!I would look at http://www.kellymom.comto find a local internationally board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) click here:

InactiveThank you so much Laura – that is great info and super helpful. I didn’t get a chance to call LLL yesterday but will do it today.
I pumped like mad yesterday any chance I got and even though I only got 1/2 oz to an oz, it was enough as I feel like my milk supply is on the rise again. And we had enough EBM to give her supplementally yesterday as she is not taking enough from me.
It is so hard to see your LO hungry and not be able to feed them!
Thanks again – you’ve saved me from 2 freakouts already in the past week.

Keymastertry breastfeeding in a warm bath (you in the bath w/ the baby) – sounds weird, but it calms them down…also, babywearing saved us- if you can walk around w/ her close to you and w/ you not wearing very much, she’ll smell you and feel close to you and perhaps want to cuddle/nurse…
hang in there!

InactiveHang in there!
I am currently BFing my MFPI baby. He is now 11 months old and doing really well. Laura gave you some really great links to check out…I just also wanted to add, for whatever it’s worth, I was never able to pump much milk with my babies. It’s especially tough when they’re really little because your mik supply takes time to get established.Again, my LO is 11 months old, and I still cannot get a let down without his help (ie nursing on the one side, pumping on the other) and I usually only get 3-4 oz a sitting. So don’t get discouraged. Instead of gauging your supply by what you pump, I would keep track of wet and poopy diapers, and of course weight gain. kellymom.com is a great resource. And I can’t say enough about resting and sleep! It does wonders for your milk supply.Hang in there! You’re doing great!July 1, 2011 at 11:31 am #68586Anonymous
InactiveThanks for all the support ladies! We have seen a bit of improvement over the past couple of days and she has latched a few times on her own when we were cuddling on the coach! Huge Improvement really! Not sure if it is the diet kicking in or what but I am relieved.
And the pumping is going a bit better and able to get 1-2 oz per time at least. I am not sure I have the coordination to master pumping and BFing at the same time!
More babywearing for us and I may try the bath thing – sounds kinda fun!

KeymasterI used to pump & feed at the same time- in bed- lots of pillows to prop everyone up (baby, me) – used my knees/lap (bent leg/s) – I even managed to use the tv remote, too HA!
you can do it!July 1, 2011 at 5:12 pm #68589Anonymous
