InactiveMy 6 week old has been crying and pulling of when feeding, choking when feeding, spitting up alot (thick mucus like spit up), having wet burps and hiccups, gasping for air, and grunting when sleeping and awake, grunting and pushing and turning red in the face, and crying alot before and after feedings. She also seems to always have a stuffy nose at night and in the morning. At her last doctors visit (a week ago) the doctor said it sounded like she has acid reflux. She said she could prescribe zantax or prilosec or we could try holding her upright after feedings and having her sleep at a 30 degree angle and see how that worked. We have tried all of that and have been having her sleep in either her car seat or her swing and although some days it seems a little better the gasping and choking really scare me. Im just not sure what to do. Im scared if she takes zantax or prilosec it may have long term effects but I don’t want to see her suffer. Does anyone have any suggestions?

InactiveOh…..and I forgot to include that I have already given up dairy incase it was a food allergy and that doesn’t seem to be helping! Her poop has actually been coming out green and mucus like!

Keymasteryikes! running out the door, but it DOES sound like a protein intolerance- especially the grunting! the poop!
there are a lot more proteins than ‘just’ milk-there’s a LOT of great info here on this board to help you!welcome! I have a LOT to say, & most of it is here, in a link called Groupie Introthis is looong, but please read/scroll/skim through it and refer back to it often, as it TRULY will help you
.there is info about WHY a baby might get reflux, about reflux and how it might be related to diet/allergies/intolerances (these are to PROTEINS in breastmilk or formula, proteins such as milk and/or soy)…there is a link to finding a ped GIthere is a link called ‘Prevacid 101’ – read this as it tells about zantac dosing, too and also prilosec…basically, there is a LOT of info to help you & we’re here, too!hang in there & so glad you found us!(this is in Groupie 101): YES! keep the baby on zantac, too, making sure to seperate the dose by 4hrs from the prilosec/prevacid! do this for a good two weeks, as this is how long it can take for you to see the results of the Prevacid IF if if the prilosec/prevacid is the proper dose & form!make sure to read Prevacid 101 (this includes prilosec info too & also refers to) &so glad you found us!~lauraNovember 16, 2010 at 11:31 am #67289Anonymous
InactiveLaura gave you some great links to look at. Make sure that you are getting the hidden dairy out as well… how long has it been that you cut it out? It can take 2 sometimes 4 wks for all of the offenders to get out of yours and that babies system. Those poops sound like an intolerance and possibly even a tummy bug since green all the time usually means something isn’t sitting well. HTH, glad you found us.

InactiveI definitely agree that it sounds like a dairy and possibly soy allergy/intolerance. The stuffy nose, reflux, green mucousy stools are all symptoms. My little guy is 3 1/2 months and starting around 7 wks he had green, runny mucousy stool with visible blood streaks, fast-forward 6 weeks and I am now dairy, soy, egg and nut free and he is SO much better, no more ezcema, baby acne, nasal congestion and most importantly no more green mucuousy stools. It is worth asking your doctor about. Also, it can take several weeks for all the proteins to leave your system so don’t give up too early! Rachel_Neocate2010-11-16 22:28:15
