HELP please!!

My 4mth old has been on Ranitidine for a couple of weeks now and is actually worse The spitting up has gotten worse, the fussiness has gotten worse and he’s gone from sleeping through the night to being up crying all night I don’t know if it’s from the meds, but they certainly aren’t helping.

My oldest son also had reflux and was on ranitidine and it did nothing for him. His was a mild case and he just spit and wasn’t fussy, so we just let him out grow it.

I need to call the dr and ask for something else. What would you recc? Reglan has been suggested to me…does anyone have a dc on this or know more about it?

I would do a search looking into reglan before going on it. It’s acutally a drug that’s given to increase emptying of the stomach, and it’s known to have some potential scary neurological side effects. Many docs who are “old school” prescribe reglan just because that’s what they used to do ten years ago and they haven’t adapted their practices to be more up to date.

If your son is in pain, I’d personally try a PPI (proton pump inhibitor). It’s a stronger med than zantac (ranitidine) in that it stops acid production. You might want to check out http://www.marci-kids.com for more information about PPIs and dosing. Marci-kids believes in more aggressive PPI dosing, so the doses are on the high side.

Most people on this site choose either the prevacid solutabs or zegerid. The difference is that the solutabs are delayed release- this means that they should be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30-60 minutes later for full effect. The advantage is that they’re easy to give b/c they taste good and are typically well tolerated. Zegerid is a newer drug, so not as many docs have heard of it, but it was developed by marci-kids. It’s an omeprazole suspension that’s immediate release. That means that it can be given any time irrespective of meals. I’ve never used it personally, so hopefully someone else can comment on it.

So I’d go with the PPI. Good luck.

Hi sorry about your lo. My daughter was started on Zantac when she was about 1 month old with several adjustments and a one day hopsital stay for iv zantac with no luck! She was then was put on Prevacid(PPI) which still did not control her pain. So now she is on Nexium 10mg twice a day for a total of 20mg, she also takes erythromycin 2ml 3x’s day ( helps her stomach to empty quicker)

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on Reglan. Yes, It CAN have some serious side effects, but it does not always. AIden has been on it since 8 weeks old (he is now 9 months) started at 4x/day now downto 2x/day. Never any side effects. He did have a gastric emptying scan that diagnosed DGE and it really helped him….Just wanted to let you know that in some cases Regaln is a good thing…
