Help please! I need help with my 5month old.

First of all, I am so happy that I found this place! I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas/help…anything.

For starters, my son was born on Nov. 11 He was 8lb. 8oz. healthy baby boy. He took to breastfeeding wonderfully and has been doing great ever since (except for those first few weeks of course – painful!). He is now 5.5 months old and over 19lbs! So, we are not having an issue with him gaining weight. I am just confused on what might be bothering him.

I always noticed that when I would feed him he would squirm and arch his back and fussed quite a bit more than normal….spit up ALOT and had a ton of loose BM. But, once he turned about 3.5 months the fussiness increased and so did the spitting up and so did the BM. His dirty diapers never have a texture to them….always watery and he was having like 6 or 7 a day and most being blowouts. He would squirm more than normal while feeding him. I called the dr. they said it was normal. I had brought up milk intolerance and shke sort of dismissed it. Well, at 4 months it was so bad, I called them and told them how it had increased and she said she wanted to see him…..the diarhea was not normal. So….

I went to the dr. and she prescribed Zantac….actually the generic kind and he was to take 2 ml 3 times a day and this was to help with the fussiness and uncomfortableness, spitting up. She also asked that I eliminate dairy for 3 weeks to see if that helped with the diarhea. I did all of this and amazingly the first few days were awesome! I thought he was fixed….lol! The past month or so he has done a ton better than before, but isn’t exactly fixed….he has some fussier days than normal but he has always been a good sleeper and he wasn’t spitting up quite as much. I had elimated all forms of dairy.

Well, I called her on Monday to give her an update…..the spitting up was better, the fussiness was better, the squirming was better and the BM had improved but he is still having 1 or 2 wet loose stools a day. There is never a seedy diaper, always yellow water basically. (TMI, sorry) So, she has now asked that I eliminate soy in addition to the dairy for 2 more weeks.

I saw the list on this forum of things that I can eat and that is wonderful! Thank you. First, do you think we are doing the right thing to treat him? The medicine in combination with the elimination of dairy and soy? He actually for the past two days has been spitting up much more than normal and I’m not sure why…..but, today is really the first day of being soy free. Also, I have a wedding this weekend and will be out of town the whole weekend. The bride has already asked that my meal be dairy/soy free – God bless her, but what am I going to do the rest of the time? I cannot find any info on what to order when dining out at fast food or regular dining.

Any help at all would be soooooo appreciated!! I hate that he has had these diapers for so long and want so badly to help him. Thanks again.

I think you are on the right track, Ann. It can take up to 2 or more weeks for soy/dairy to clear your systems, so keep with it. It sounds like things are getting better. If, after you have tried the diet for that long, and he is still uncomfy, you may want to look into a PPI instead of the H2 blocker like Zantac. Usually, they are better.

As for the fast food. When I was doing it, the only place I found that worked well was Wendy’s. Their buns and fries were milk free. I can’t totally remember about the soy issue though. My advice would be to try several restaurant web pages. I found that nearly all of them include a page where each food items is listed with all ingredients, allergens, etc.

I would explore diet & meds. max zantac dose by weight is 10mgs per kilo. don’t just take my word- there’s a link from ‘Prevacid 101’ that is stickied (top post) in the Medicines Forum and also linked to from ‘Groupie INtro’ that is stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum. ‘Groupie intro’ is loong, but FULL of links and info to help you- refer back to it as you go along…

as for diet there is a lot in the TED Forum that is listed as safe foods and also there’s a mSPI forum w/ stickied posts…

Well he is on the generic….but are you saying I am giving him too much? I always thought that was a high dose. My sister’s little girl is 18 months and only takes 1ml 3 times a day. Thanks for responding!

no, I’m just saying to check the dose. you can’t really go too high w/ these drugs…don’t quote me bcse I am not 100% on that- I just know that all too often doctors UNder dose, so if your lo is on a good dose then run w/ it!!!

just another possibility.. my lactation consultant thought that my daughters blow-outs ans frequent poops were from her getting too much foremilk… not enough of the richer hindmilk… which can also cause gas… and a lactose intolerant type of reaction.

could that be a possibility?

Thanks for all of the help. We have already explored the possibility of too much foremilk and I don’t believe that is the issue anymore. The doctor and I think he is intolerant to something I am eating, we just can’t find out what it is. Has anyone ever had to eliminate beef? I am starting to see a coorelation between these diapers and beef. Could it be just beef alone or would I need to eliminate dairy, soy, beef together?

there have been mamas who report they cannot eat beef…

I would think that if you cut out all beef (even in ingredients) for a good 2 weeks then it will give you an idea if it’s only beef…if after 2 weeks you don’t see a difference, then you can cut out all milk proteins for another 2 weeks…
