InactiveHi, I have an 8 month old who has silent reflux. He probably weighs about 21 lbs now. He is currently on 22.5 mg prevacid. He has been so miserable the last 3 days I am at wits end. I know he has 3 teeth cutting through right now, but he was not nearly this bad with his other 5 teeth that have come through (yes he has had 8 teeth come through in the last 2 1/2 months). How do I know if he is miserable from reflux, teething or both? He has been moaning and groaning all day long and on the verge of crying. He is not a huge crier to begin with, but he is just miserable right now. He’s not happy eating, he is thrashing around in his sleep. I just don’t know what to think. He doesn’t cry when I can actually hear the silent reflux, so I sometimes think it’s under control, but he still is uncomfortable eating some of the time (but that could be teething right?) I am so frustrated that I can’t tell what is wrong with him. LAst time I was at the peds, he would not up the dose of prevacid and said that he would put him on domperidone before he would up the prevacid. The last thing I want to do is put him on another medication.
Any suggestions or tips on trying to figure out what is wrong? I am going crazy. Great time for my husband to go on a business trip too
I have been at this by myself for the past 4 days and still have a week left……my poor 3 year old too 🙁TIA
Cindy

InactiveCindy,
We’re going through the same thing right now…wondering if it’s teething or not. Can you try to give him a dose of advil. If it helps, then you know it’s more likely teething. Sorry no other tips. Are you guys in Canada?

InactiveHi Lori,
Yes, we are in Canada, north of Toronto. It’s just so frustrating not knowing. I’ve given him tylenol through the day but it doesn’t seem to do anything……haven’t tried Motrin though.

InactiveWhen you give Motrin, make sure it is NOT on an empty stomach. It can make their tummies hurt if there isn’t something in it. Teething does make reflux worse. So do colds.

InactiveCindy,
We’re in Thornhill. Good point about the advil, sherry.

Keymasteryou can try rubbing benedryl on his gums- there’s been a lot posted about teething and reflux, you might want to do a search

to do a search: there’s the ‘search’ button located in the upper right hand corner of the screen
you put the key word/s you’re searching for
then you choose “Topic Subject” from the drop- down menu of “Search In”
then I like to choose “All Forums” from the drop- down menu of “Search Forum”
then I like to choose “Topic Start Date” from the drop- down menu of “Sort Results By” (this way I get all the posts from the past that might help me)

InactiveLori,
I am in Bradford, probably about 40 minutes away from you…..small world. Have you been seeing a ped GI in Toronto?

InactiveYes, we’ve seen Dr. Yeung, Dr. Durno, and now Dr. Ling. We’ve also seen feeding doctors, pediatric psychiatry for her feeding issues.

InactiveI know I’m really late with this reply, but our ped and ped gi said that teething will can make reflux 10 times worse….my lo was always in total misery with teething, so much so that once we went to the ER thinking he was ill (looking back he was following the same pattern as later teething, but this was the first time and we didn’t realize how bad it could be)….also another time he refused solids for 8 days in a row with teething, not sick….just teething.
It can be absolutely horrible. I did a combo of Hyland’s teething tablets, Hyland’s teething gel (really helped!) Children’s Motrin, and Children’s benadryl. My dh jokingly called this the triple threat and we did it round the clock when necessary. My ped okay’d the whole thing, even on top of the regular reflux meds. We also used Mylanta more during these episodes. Some folks say that the reflux meds can be adjusted to higher doses during teething and then back to regular amounts after teething. We were already pretty maxed out on the ppi dose, so we didn’t do that route. I hope it’s gotten better by now!

InactiveCindy,
How many times a day is he taking it?.
Studies have shown that babies metabolize the med faster so 3 times a day is better than 2 if that is what you are doing.
Some Dr’s also prescribe the h2s like zantac or pepcid. They need to be taken hours apart..some drs say2 some say 5 hours.
If it were me, I would ask the pharmacist.
But teething does make things worse. Although Elijah makes a fish mouth all the time now that he has top teeth.
