InactiveColton has been doing really good. He is still on Zegerid for his reflux but other than that an the occasional ear infection he has been doing pretty good. Until today he developed a severe diaper rash and tonight he was bleeding. I have been using destin on him but its not even helping. I quit using diaper wipes because they just burn him worse. I need some ideas on how to get him relief. Help please.

InactiveOur local pharmacy compounds this diaper cream called Dr. Hurwitz’s diaper creme. It’s amazing. I’m not sure if it’s something that other pharmacies would know about though and I don’t know what’s in it.

Other than that, when Kaelyn had such awful diaper rashes before we figured out her allergies, we would use washclothes and plain water to clean her. We also let her run around without her diaper as much as possible so it could air out. We kept the bath time as short as possible. Also, some rashes actually get worse with a “barrier” cream like desitin. They actually need something like A and D or Neosporin to help them heal. Has he been on antibiotics? Could it be a yeast infection? If so, we actually were told to buy adult yeast infection cream and spread it on her rash. It worked wonders the one time that it was a yeast infection. Did he try any new foods? Could he be reacting to that?

InactiveHe hasn’t had any new foods and a friend just told me about A and D so I will get some of it tomorrow and I will call and see if our pharmacy has heard of Dr. Hurwitz’s diaper creme. I just feel so bad for him because it hurts to wipe him but if I don’t get him clean its just going to be worse. I have been using a wash cloth to clean him today and I will do that tomorrow too. He just started an antibiotic yesterday so I don’t think its yeast. I can generally tell when its a yeast diaper rash and just a plain sore rash. Thanks for the advice. I can’t stand seeing my little man in pain. The reflux was bad enough its time he gets a break. Oh and for those who have followed our story of Colt’s sleep habits I am so happy to say that he has been sleeping great. He doesn’t take naps but he is in a good mood all day so I will take it. So for those who are dealing with sleep just remember at some point it does get better.

Inactivewait if he started an antibiotic yesterday and has a rash today then it can certainly be a yeast rash. antiobiotics are notorious for causing yeast infections, because they kill all the good bacteria.

InactiveIt normally takes a few days before the antibiotic to cause a yeast infection for him at least and I can normally tell by looking if its yeast infection and that isn’t what it looks like. I will keep an eye on it and if it doesn’t go away in a couple days I probably will treat like a yeast infection.

InactiveKathleen,
Do you think he could be teething? My boys have all gotten a really bad rash at one point while teething… especially molars. Just an idea. Hope it clears up soon.May 12, 2007 at 10:38 am #32987Anonymous
InactiveMy kids all would get a super bad, bleeding rash from being on antibiotics. I learned quickly (not to make you feel bad – it took me a LONG time to figure this out) to put tons of Desitin on them right after their first dose and to keep putting tons of it on because even one poop after an antibiotic would destroy the skin on their little bums.
Once the rash has started pinxav http://www.pinxav.com works better than desitin. Frequent bathing, avoiding wipes, drying the bum completely before diapering, loading on the desitin or pixav, and some naked time all seem to help.
I hope he’s feeling better soon. I always feel so terrible when one of my three have this kind of horrible diaper rash.
Good news about his night time sleeping.

InactiveHeather,
I never even thought about teething because he has all his teeth they get by the time they are two. But now that I think about it that might be our problem. The rash is a little better today but he is really fussy. With the mouth full of teeth he has I am not going to put my finger in to see if he is teething but I might just go ahead and asume that is whats going on.
Thanks for all the advice. Isn’t funny that after two years I still need help when he is in pain?

InactiveBrianna used to get rashes everytime she was teething too. Pinxav saved us! Now we use it for every diaper change because Brianna has super sensitive skin…and she seems to be teething all the one…one poops through and another one starts.

InactiveI was visiting a friend this weekend, and she was talking about how her son’s diaper rashes only improve if she uses a mixture of aquaphor and Mylanta. I’ve never tried it , but she says it’s great.

Inactiveim guessing its the aluminum in mylanta that helps, cause pinvax also contains aluminum. though that would make me nervous, wonder if that can be absorbed into the body?
