InactiveMy daughter Joey (21mos) has had awful reflux symptoms. She puked constantly as a baby. Her chronic cough started at 6wks. She’s also had horrible ear and sinus infections, multiple ear surgeries, and a horrendous cough. Saw pulmonologist, allergist, ENT, GI, Immunology…the entire gamut.
Allergist put her on 60mg of prevacid (30mg BID) and GI disagreed and moved her back down to 15mg/day. ENT wants to do sinus surgery. We would prefer not to.Anyways, we decided to stick with the allergist. She’s currently taking 60mg of prevacid. (30mg solutab BID) and is completely symptom free
She is also on rhinocort 2puffs/nostril once a day.Does anyone know of any potentially negative side effects or long-term risks of being on such a big dose of prevacid? I worry because it seems so high and the rest of the docs that see her all think its way too much.Thoughts? Comments?TIA

KeymasterI say way to go for allergist!
what you could do is to try and back off on the dose and see what happens- you can always go back up!
maybe try 45mgs – I think that’s what I would do…also make sure you’re giving the prevacid on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later
did the allergist mention any kind of food intolerances?
not allergies, but intolerances?
might be something to explore next?May 13, 2010 at 9:58 am #66337Anonymous
InactiveShe has had EXTENSIVE allergy testing. I wouldn’t have the slightest clue where to start to figure out any intolerances
She is symptom-free on the prevacid 60mg. I am happy to keep her on it until she outgrows it…but was just wondering if you guys knew of any reason why that much wuld be unsafe??May 13, 2010 at 4:58 pm #66338hellbennt
Keymasternot sure why it would be unsafe…
maybe nutropenia w/ prevacid?:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8843&TPN=1if there ARE intolerances, maybe such a high dose wouldn’t be needed (if they are addressed) or maybe the rhinocort (has a steroid in it?) wouldn’t be needed?
really good explanation of the relationship b/t intolerances & reflux- second post dowm:

Inactiveemail phillipsjo@missouri.edu (I think that’s the email, hopefully someone can confirm first… there may be a . after the phillips, i’mnot sure). He’s very knowledgeable about these things (from marci-kids) and has answered many of our questions regarding our kids by email. Good luck.
