InactiveHello all,
It’s kind of nice to post in here and have it not be about my kid refusing to eat or refluxing horribly. Gabby has been doing much better with her reflux, but now we have a mystery fever. We went camping with our extended family this past weekend and Gabby’s two cousins came down with a high fever, one during the camp out and the other the next day. Now, of course, Gabby has it.
Her temp was around 100.1 on Monday evening. Yesterday it hovered around the 100s. Last night, it jumped to 102 and now it’s 103.4. The cousin’s fevers just went away within a day and a half. Gabby is getting worse.
Any hints on how to bring the fever down? Any thoughts on what this might be? I was thinking flu because her cousins complained of body aches. Poor Gabby. I just want her to be better now.

InactiveWell, all I can say is we are in the same boat! Ellie (our 3 year old) has the same fever and her ped said it was just a virus, but she’s had a fever since Saturday! I called back today, and they’re going to call in an antibiotic, because he thinks she must have a secondary infection. yuk!
Motrin works best for her. It usually brings the fever right down and works for several hours.I hope your little one is feeling better soon

InactiveBUMP!
We’re still at 102 degrees. We’ve tried cool baths, tylenol, motrin, and lots of rest.
Gabby did NOT take her afternoon bottle. She drank some water though. How much water is too much at this age? I know the doc said to use pedialight but she hates it. She’ll willingly take water. Tips? Ideas?

InactiveKathy,
My daughter Ellie was put on Zithromax today since her fever didn’t go away. She has had a fever since Sat. Today it was 102 again. The nurse told me that the rule of thumb is a virus can cause a fever for 48-72 hours, but after that if fever is still present it is most likely some type of secondary infection. I wouldn’t wait much longer than 48 hours to either take her back in or at least give your pediatrician a call, especially with her being so young…of course I tend to be cautious because Ellie had something like this one time, and she ended up in the hospital with bronchiolitis. I don’t want to risk it.I would think it would take a LOT of water to be too much especially with a fever as the risk of dehydration is much higher in small children and infants.I hope Gabby is feeling better soon, and Happy Birthday to her!August 2, 2007 at 4:09 am #40308Anonymous
InactiveHappy Birthday
One part lemonade to 5 parts waterOne part juice to four parts waterYou can use instead of pedialyte.I would probably take her back to the Dr…its a long time for a high fever.August 2, 2007 at 2:16 pm #40350Anonymous
InactiveHappy Birthday Gabby! Sorry you have to be sick.
I’d take her to the doc or at least call. With my kids if it’s only a virus the fever usually only lasts 1-2 days, three at most. She may have a bacterial infection. I only remember one time Liza had a fever for five days and it was viral and passed with no meds. I hope she’s feeling better soon.August 3, 2007 at 6:59 am #40419Anonymous
InactiveSorry I missed this…
Happy belated birthday! Hope she’s feeling better! Is the fever gone yet?Just to put your mind at ease, we’ve had fevers lasting up to 5 days. After 3 days, we go back to check to make sure that nothing else has cropped up. Our doc said that you need to look at the behaviour over and beyond the number- so if they’re acting REALLY sick then that’s more concerning than if they’re acting somewhat more normal but have a high fever. We’re pretty aggressive with trying to bring down fever with Sarah b/c of her seizures- we do all the same as you. If it’s really high, you can alternate motrin and tylenol generally (i.e. they can overlap). We also strip down to the diaper, and give frequent lukewarm (not cold) baths. Hope she’s feeling better today.August 3, 2007 at 6:53 pm #40453Anonymous
InactiveThis might sound strange, but a fever is really nothing to worry about. I don’t even worry with trying to get my kids fevers to come down. Not at that temp anyway. I think if it got to 104 then I would try something just because she could start seizing. I would’t worry about though until it happens. Just keep monitoring it. When my boys have a fever I just keep giving them pedilite and try to get them to eat. If at all possible skip dairy and anything with sugar in it too. My doc said it’s not the temp you need to be concerned about. It is more how they are acting and look. A fever is believe it or not a good thing. It means your childs body is doing what it is supposed to be doing. If however your baby seems dehydrated or lethargic (sp) then get them seen right away. Other wise just keep her hydrated. Oh, I will give motrin or tylenol if they seem miserable.
Oh, just read she doesn’t like pedilite. Have you tryed the bubble gum flavor or they even have pedialite pops. You can find them in the baby section with the other pedialite stuff. You freeze them. My boys won’t eat them frozen but they love for me to cut them up and put them in their water in their cups. They won’t go bad in the freezor so even if she doesn’t like them now she might later or you can even use them for morning sickness when your pregnant. That is if you ever decided to have another one.
I know it’s a hard thing to think about after having a reflux baby. Justice’smom2007-08-03 19:01:26

InactiveHey everyone,
Thanks for the tips. I was just nervous as she felt like she was on fire and she was very cranky. I overlapped tylenol and motrin per the pedi nurse and her fever broke late Wednesday night. But now, my sister-in-law just called saying her kids might have the chicken pox. And that is who Gabby got the fever from so I’m really hoping they don’t. Tomorrow is supposed to be her birthday party. I really don’t want to cancel but I’m not subjecting my friends’ children to the chicken pox. Ugh.

InactiveHey Kathy,
I replied to your email, but wanted to let you know here too.. not to give any more motrin..its very important. If she has the chicken pox that is.. so just incase she does i wouldnt give it anymore!But.. again as in my email, i hope she doesnt have it.. but if she does its good to get it over with now than when they get older..and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!August 4, 2007 at 8:28 am #40470Anonymous
InactiveOh no! I hope it’s not the pox! Lauren, I’m so glad that you told us that about no motrin when it’s the pox.
